Tuesday’s Torch 601
August 18, 2020
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)
These are clearly very oft-quotes scriptures and have a very special meaning to me as it relates to this torch that it is my privilege to carry. I’d like to apply it a bit differently today. Clearly in these verses the light is a fire. This isn’t a simple case of flipping a light switch and there it is.
So for this message I would ask that you imagine yourself and others as glass mason jars. People for the most part are strolling around with a lid on but full of straw, sticks, dry leaves etc. Those who are open to the Gospel don’t have their lid closed. And once in a while they will receive a little spark that sets them ablaze with the Gospel and they are just eager to learn and grow. Our job as we are full of this Gospel light or fire if you will is to share it with others.
And this is a very huge blessing for that person we share the fire with. For us? Not only is it a huge blessing but it is an absolute necessity! We need to share that fire so that it keeps burning.
Back to the analogy, think about it. If you have a fire burning there are certain things you must do to keep it burning. Adding more fuel to the fire and growing the blaze by adding more wood. This can be accomplished by continued prayer and study. But what else does the fire need? Oxygen, it needs to breathe.
What good is it if we build a blazing fire in ourselves, in our personal mason jar, if we then place the lid on it and twist it tight? That fire will die. Some people may have a mighty large jar but the fire will eventually burn up all the oxygen and die. Smaller jars burn up even more quickly.
There is nothing quite as disappointing as seeing someone embark upon a righteous path and start aligning themselves to the Gospel as taught in holy scripture only to turn away and go back. Maybe some didn’t really get the fire fully started? Maybe they had that fire but then bottled it up, put the lid on it because they were afraid of what others might say or think because of the changes they are making. Maybe they had friends or even family members attempt to pour water on their flame and put it out?
I state this because that doesn’t just happen to those just starting out, it can happen to those of us who have been attempting to stay on the straight and narrow path for a long time. This can happen as we grow complacent or are worried about taking a stand in a day and age where staying true to righteous principles is downright mocked and ridiculed.
So let us strive to not just live righteous principles but to share them. Share the light (fire) that is within you and keep it going. Continue to pray and study and worship so that we are constantly strengthening our fire. This is what is needed in order to cause the Gospel of Jesus Christ to spread like wildfire over our land and over the entire world! Look around Brothers and Sisters, we need that now more than ever before! I testify of these things and hopefully have shared just a little of the fire that I myself have been trying my hardest to build up. And if you’d be so kind, I would love your feedback. Please share your light and your fire with me and everyone around you! I say these things ever so hopefully and humbly in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
