Tuesday’s Torch 602

August 25, 2020

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”  (Matthew 5:43-45).

I felt compelled to share these verses tonight after a couple days where I have allowed myself to get upset and angry about some circumstances that I’m unhappy about and angry at those I have felt wronged by.

These are wonderful verses but also very difficult ones to always try and live up to.  Perhaps some of you also struggle with this tendency to get upset at people and have a hard time forgiving or being kind to those who you feel have wronged you.

I find comfort that as we strive to love others, both friends and supposed or actual enemies alike we are children of God.  Much like as we often resemble our parents and our children resemble us, it’s great to realize that we can develop attributes that make us more like our Heavenly Father.  As we do that, others will be able to see that resemblance in us and will desire to know more about where that light in our countenance comes from.

And just as the verse states that God allows the sun to rise and the merciful rains to fall on the just and the unjust we can attempt to offer love and kindness to everyone and not just those who offer it to us.  It’s definitely nice to know that even when we may be struggling to walk the straight and narrow or get sidetracked or angry, our Father in Heaven will not leave us out in the cold dark desert.  He will still provide us with opportunities for success and blessings.  May we all strive to love one another no matter how easy or difficult it can be from time to time.  I hope that this message finds you all well and can be of help to you.  I share this message for your benefit as well as my own, and I do so humbly and prayerfully in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Tuesday’s Torch 601

August 18, 2020

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

These are clearly very oft-quotes scriptures and have a very special meaning to me as it relates to this torch that it is my privilege to carry.  I’d like to apply it a bit differently today.  Clearly in these verses the light is a fire.  This isn’t a simple case of flipping a light switch and there it is.

So for this message I would ask that you imagine yourself and others as glass mason jars.  People for the most part are strolling around with a lid on but full of straw, sticks, dry leaves etc.  Those who are open to the Gospel don’t have their lid closed.  And once in a while they will receive a little spark that sets them ablaze with the Gospel and they are just eager to learn and grow.  Our job as we are full of this Gospel light or fire if you will is to share it with others.

And this is a very huge blessing for that person we share the fire with.  For us?  Not only is it a huge blessing but it is an absolute necessity!  We need to share that fire so that it keeps burning.

Back to the analogy, think about it.  If you have a fire burning there are certain things you must do to keep it burning.  Adding more fuel to the fire and growing the blaze by adding more wood.  This can be accomplished by continued prayer and study.  But what else does the fire need?  Oxygen, it needs to breathe.

What good is it if we build a blazing fire in ourselves, in our personal mason jar, if we then place the lid on it and twist it tight?  That fire will die.  Some people may have a mighty large jar but the fire will eventually burn up all the oxygen and die.  Smaller jars burn up even more quickly.

There is nothing quite as disappointing as seeing someone embark upon a righteous path and start aligning themselves to the Gospel as taught in holy scripture only to turn away and go back.  Maybe some didn’t really get the fire fully started? Maybe they had that fire but then bottled it up, put the lid on it because they were afraid of what others might say or think because of the changes they are making.  Maybe they had friends or even family members attempt to pour water on their flame and put it out?

I state this because that doesn’t just happen to those just starting out, it can happen to those of us who have been attempting to stay on the straight and narrow path for a long time.  This can happen as we grow complacent or are worried about taking a stand in a day and age where staying true to righteous principles is downright mocked and ridiculed.

So let us strive to not just live righteous principles but to share them. Share the light (fire) that is within you and keep it going.  Continue to pray and study and worship so that we are constantly strengthening our fire.  This is what is needed in order to cause the Gospel of Jesus Christ to spread like wildfire over our land and over the entire world!  Look around Brothers and Sisters, we need that now more than ever before!  I testify of these things and hopefully have shared just a little of the fire that I myself have been trying my hardest to build up.  And if you’d be so kind, I would love your feedback.  Please share your light and your fire with me and everyone around you!  I say these things ever so hopefully and humbly in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 600

August 11, 2020

This is the 600th Torch. I have spent a lot of time trying to decide what to share this week and it’s been a difficult one.  I think back to my friend Tim and all of the time and effort he spent on all of the ones he shared and I think “Why”?

Why did he start it and why did he continue and why do I keep it going?  There is an interaction between Christ and  Simon Peter, or the Apostle Peter as he is best known that I feel is fitting. These are the words the Savior spake unto him from Luke 22: 31-32

“And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”

We are to liken the scriptures to ourselves and as we grow our relationship with God the Father and his son Jesus Christ we feel the desire to share that knowledge.  It is my personal belief that my friend Tim was trying to share the testimony and conversion that he had due to his relationship with the Lord.  It is that relationship that I strive to build and share more strongly each week.

This week with the 600th Torch I would like to share with you that those verses are for each of us.  Replace Simon in those verses with your own name and the statement is just as true.  Brothers and Sisters, Satan would love to have you, if for no other reason than to put out your light and to hide it from the world, to silence you.

The Tuesday’s Torch has been shining for a long time now and I personally pledge to keep it going as long as I am able.  But let us all take the fire that has been burning for so long now, the fire from the Torch, and use it to further strengthen our own personal torches, let us take that and shine the way for others to follow along as well.  If that means sharing this weekly message then do that, if you feel impressed to share your own words with those in your circles then do that.

The Savior has prayed for each of us that our faith not fail us.  He desires for each of us to be converted and then to strengthen others.  There are those who perhaps only you will be able to reach.  Please share your light with them.  Please shine a torch in the darkness for them.  You have been called to this work!  Rise to the occasion and be a light to the world in these days!  I share this message ever so humbly in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 599

August 4, 2020

Many blind received their sight during the Saviors mortal ministry.  Some sat on the side of the road begging while still others were led to him in order to seek the blessing of sight.  Jesus Christ physically blessed them that they would be able to see and it was done according to his words and their faith.

We all have had and still yet have more need of having our eyes opened by him. In Matthew 13:13-16 Christ described his teachings in parables thusly,

“Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.”

In these verses He is speaking about something greater even than our physical eyes and ears.  As many people as he gave their physical sight back, he offers spiritual sight and hearing to all.  The parables he shares were about knowledge that was common in those days, so some could see and hear those words and dismiss them as something common but only if they were not tuned in spiritually.

I have heard and shared that the scriptures are ofttimes written in spiritual code. As we are in tune with the spirit by living right and seeking diligently in the words with our hearts and minds open to receive guidance we are able to receive far more from a verse or collection of verses than just what is contained in the written word.

It is in this way that we can understand how those who are not believers are able to read the scriptures and attack them and try to discredit them.  They do not have the spirit with them and so they are unable to see and hear the true meaning behind the words.  At that point the Bible is nothing more than a collection of books to dissect and criticize.

This spiritual code is not deciphered by our physical eyes and ears but by our spiritual eyes and ears.  As groups of us come together to discuss and study the scriptures we will often read the same verse and get a prompting that speaks about something to us that another doesn’t see that way but has been prompted to receive another message completely.

This can be of amazing benefit to us.  As we get better at seeing and hearing spiritually we will be withdrawing from a limitless bank of information and promptings as we read the scriptures.  Many times the exact same verse that you received guidance from in the past may guide you in unexpected or different ways today.  Because they are written for our benefit now, at this very moment and for any exact moment we are actively reading and searching the scriptures.

So as we read the scriptures, I feel it is very important to note all of the miracles such as the physically blind receiving their sight, but let us always remember that it is to show that he can do all things.  That the physical manifestation of the blessing of sight applies to all of us spiritually.  So as those in olden times begged and pleaded with the Savior for their sight, let us each just as humbly seek the blessing of spiritual sight from He who stands ready to bless us and guide us.  I personally know that He will help us.  I testify that we are known and loved by our Savior Jesus Christ and by our Father in Heaven.  And I wholeheartedly share this message with each of you individually, and I do so in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
