Tuesday’s Torch 588
May 19, 2020
Things have been crazy for a while now. And not just here but all over the world. Even people who have always considered themselves to be calm people have been anything but. Some who have considered themselves prepared for hard times quickly discovered they weren’t. People made mad dash scrambled to buy up anything and everything they thought they’d urgently need during a pandemic. Especially it seems toilet paper and paper towels.
Through all of this there are others who did remain comparably calm. Most of those few are individuals and families that were actually prepared. Those with food storages, those with savings and everything set up to fall back on in tight times. Now I don’t bring this up to throw off on those who may have been caught off guard and who found themselves less than prepared or who have fallen on hard times. I bring this up to shift into our short but important message for tonight.
1 Thessalonians 5:2-8 states the following:
“For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.”
This is one of many references in the scriptures that speak of the time when the Savior shall return. I’m not sharing this as a “The end is near!” message written on a cardboard sign, but just to call attention to the fact that spiritually we should all be preparing and studying so that we don’t have to try and make a mad dash journey seeking whatever our personal equivalent of spiritual toilet paper is when any hard times come that challenge us spiritually.
And that isn’t just a second coming situation. We are hit with trials and difficulties out of the blue so often. I know I’ve personally been blindsided at times. Had I been in a stronger and better place spiritually some of those situations would have never happened and those that still would have would’ve been easier to survive.
So brothers and sisters, let us all work on ourselves spiritually, let us all learn and grow. Let us do this so that we will be prepared spiritually for whatever spiritual challenges we are faced with. Whatever spiritual murder hornets if you will, may be sent our way by the adversary. Let us turn to our Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ to help us be prepared. Let us study the words found in the scriptures. Let us be prepared and let us have that Hope of salvation referenced in the verses we read tonight. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
