Tuesday’s Torch 587

May 12, 2020

When thinking of what to share tonight I came across some great verses to share. Recently I had decided to rethink the way that I was praying.  I realized that I had been seeking blessings that I wanted and for things to work out as I thought would be best.  On several occasions since then I’ve focused prayers on specific people and their needs and it has a profoundly different impact when I do.

Obviously I don’t mention that to brag as I still tend to offer up many that are focused on myself.  Not that it’s a bad thing to pray for the things you need and even simply want.  But anywho.  I’m getting a little sidetracked with disclaimers.  The verses I would like to share come from a great intercessory prayer that Christ offered on our behalf.

John 17:13-17 states:

“And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”

Contained in these few verses are a couple huge details, huge blessings that Christ wishes for us.  There at the beginning he expresses for us to share in his joy!  And we can share in the joy that through his infinite atonement we are all eternally blessed.

He points out that absolute truth that ofttimes the more dedicated we are to living the truths of the Gospel the more we seem to be hated in the world at large.  Keeping the commandments and following the Savior are viewed as uncool, unpopular, unnecessary, outdated or downright treated as foolishness. But we know better.  And if not, we should know better.

But you see he says that we are hated because like him we are not of the world.  The difference between being in the world and of the world is a big thing.  We can’t take ourselves out of the world, and in these verses the Savior doesn’t ask that we be removed, but that we be protected from evil.  That is a blessing he wants for us and we do our part to help that blessing be a part of our lives by living righteously so that we may be led by the spirit more fully.

The final blessing in this portion I have shared is that we be sanctified.  The Merriam Webster dictionary lists the first two definitions of sanctify as 1) to set apart to a sacred purpose and 2) to free from sin.

Both of these are very special blessings.  By stating in these verses that we are not of the world in the same way that Jesus himself was not of the world he is making it known that more is expected of us.  We can rise to meet that expectation and how do we do that?  By seeking truth.  The Lord in this wonderful prayer for us points to the word of God as the truth.  And those truths are what sanctify us.

I really love that second definition of the word sanctify:  to free from sin.  I am eternally grateful for that blessing as I have needed that saving grace so often in my life and I know and testify that we can repent and be forgiven for our sins and shortcomings and not only will the Savior free us from our sins and weaknesses, but he will help us to turn our weaknesses into strengths.

Study the word.  Study the truth.  Be in the world but brothers and sisters do not be of the world.  We are called to be more.  Rise up to the call and become more like the Savior.  That is true joy and happiness.  Of these things I so testify, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.comwe enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
