Tuesday’s Torch 586

May 5, 2020

Strength.  I’ve been contemplating true strength.  What it is and how to achieve it.  Some of us can fight against our physical limitations and boundaries and build on it.  Others can’t.  Some take their pride and self confidence in direct relation to physical strength.  Many idolize their favorite athletes and fighters based on this strength, and skill and ability.  But true strength, the strength we should seek, where and what is that? Let’s read a couple verses.  2 Corinthians 10:2-5 states:

“But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”

Many times in my life my anger and temper has gotten the best of me and I’ve wished to take matters into my own hands.  In some of these cases I think my physical circumstances have been a blessing in disguise to keep me out of trouble and to keep me from going down a pathway that wouldn’t lead anywhere remotely close to a path of righteousness.

These verses highlight how in order to be righteous, while we are in the flesh, our battles and as we “go to war” so to speak, we do that in the spirit. We do that through the power of God and through our Savior Jesus Christ.  We bring all of our thoughts and impulses under control and align them with the will of God.  That is true strength and what we should all be seeking.

And those we look up to?  Those we wish to be more like?  How do we grade ourselves?  Verse 7 asks and answers the following:

“Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.”

Outward appearances can easily hide the truth.  Some we view as strong may be weak and some who are weak may be strong.  We are told that our weaknesses may be made strengths.  I believe it is in this way.  That by our choices and by our goals and the aspirations of our hearts, we become strong through Christ.

Let us all make sure those we look to as our examples of strength are examples of strength through Christ.  That is the true and lasting strength.  That is the strength and power that once built upon, will grow and stand forever.

So let me challenge each of us, if your own personal war begins today, are you prepared to go to war?  How can you more fully build spiritual strength?  If it were physical, those who could would build muscle, or train in different weaponry, or different forms of martial arts.  But this spiritual warfare will depend on our willingness to follow the Savior, and keep his commandments, and study his words and emulate him.  So that we may have an outpouring of true spiritual power that our Father promises to us as we seek to do his will!

May we all find and build true strength. May we all study the scriptures, and pray and learn the ways to grow in the Gospel.  May we all be more like the Savior.  In whose name I share this message, even Jesus Christ, Amen.

We pray the Lord will touch our readers. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.comwe enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
