Tuesday’s Torch 585

April 28, 2020

There are some things that I have repeated many times since I have been doing these messages.  Probably more times than anything else has been that with God all things are possible.  While lots of messages have dealt with overcoming difficulties in life I have tried to share messages of help and hope.

We have discussed how our God is a God of more than enough and that the Savior has paid for not only our sins and transgressions but that he felt our pains as well so that He knows how to help us and understands what we are going through at all times, because he felt them himself.

Tonight’s message is a short one.  I’ve had people ask me how I can continue to have hope despite all of my challenges and circumstances.  In this world I can point to my wonderful children and other family members that are a tremendous blessing.  From a spiritual side of things, knowing that we have a loving Father in Heaven and that his Son is our Savior is amazing.  Where is the source of the knowledge that brings me such hope?  The scriptures are a large part of that.  Romans 15:4 says:

“For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”

Hope is what we are to have as we patiently learn and study the scriptures.  I love the wording contained in that verse that says “comfort of the scriptures “. It’s a very simple promise that we will be comforted if we turn to the scriptures, we could all use more comfort, I know I can.  Sometimes as I’ve prepared these devotionals I feel a bit selfish, because I feel like preparing and sharing them is helping me far more than it could possibly be helping you.

So I would like to issue a prayerful challenge and request.  I’m sure many of you are already studying and reading as much as, if not more than me, if so keep it up!  Keep receiving all the hope that you’re gaining.  For those who aren’t reading and seeking these things out for yourselves in the scriptures, give it a shot.  Don’t just read, but really feast on the scriptures.  If you do, you’ll understand why I and so many others preach so often about hope and how all things are truly possible with God and through Christ.  You will come to realize more fully that our God is a God of more than enough.  I personally know that is true and I share this message humbly in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 584

April 21, 2020

For Today’s message, I opened the scriptures to Philippians 3.  To be quite honest, I opened my scriptures app, went to the New Testament, scrolled down and clicked Philippians and at random (to me) clicked on chapter 3 and scrolled down a bit and stopped.  It was my hope that I would be led to a verse to speak on, and I found one.

This past week I have been trying to focus on looking forward instead of backwards.  It can be far too easy to look back on mistakes of the past and beat ourselves up, or to look back on blessings of the past that we no longer have and live in regrets or longing for days gone by.  I’ve even been listening to a song called “Ain’t Looking back,” so imagine my surprise to read the following on my randomly selected verse.  Philippians 3:13-14

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

In this chapter, Paul has been speaking of his sacrifices for the Lord and this is clear direction that we are to set our sights forward and not backwards to receive our reward in serving God.

To all who read or hear the words of this Torch, May we all press toward the mark.  Or in other words may we all seek righteousness and seek God moving forwards!  No matter what happened in the past, positive or negative, we can decide now this very day to focus more intently on serving God and looking to the future.

As we do this?  What is promised to us?  Let’s read the last two verses of that chapter and Paul will answer for us:  Verses 20 and 21 state:

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”

What a glorious promise!  And yet another marvelous expression that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ makes all things possible!  For some obvious reasons and others known only to few, I love the promise of physical blessings after the challenges faced in this life.  Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t to simply do the right things in order to receive blessings, we do that out of love for our Father in Heaven and His son Jesus Christ.  But how wonderful and loving it is that they have provided a way for us to receive those blessings!  A gift that we on our own would never qualify for.  Yet given to us as we do all that we can do, and the Savior has stepped in to make up the difference.

So I take this opportunity to increase my efforts to focus on doing the right things now and into the future.  To stop looking backwards in order to look forward to all that God still has in store for me. To look at what He still has ahead for my family.  And I invite each of you to join me in this new or increased determination and focus.  Let us seek to do right and let us seek the Lord.  We will be blessed for our efforts by a God who makes all things possible.  And I share this message in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 583

Tuesday’s Torch 583

April 14, 2020

There will be moments in life where we are faced with trials and realize that we need to make some changes in either ourselves or simply in our focus or goals.  Many times it may feel that some sort of rebirth may be in order.  We will read the following verses that are from the Savior teaching Nicodemus in John 3:3-6:

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

This speaks truly to a spiritual conversion and of baptism but I think it’s interesting to also look into verse 7 and 8 as well:

“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.”

I feel like these verses are a very wonderful description that shows the spiritual power that is available to us as we more fully are born and grow in the spirit.  Sometimes when we are struggling and trying to find our way, we have an opportunity to turn our pains into spiritual growing pains.  As we do that, we will turn our trials that could be stumbling blocks into stepping stones along our path to victory!

With everything going on in the world and in our personal lives, I believe that a little more spiritual self reflection is in order. May we find ways to grow in light and truth.  May we be nourished by the good word of God as found in the holy scriptures!  And may we become spiritual giants who are ready to overcome the world and all the worldly concerns that can weigh us down and bring us into the pit of despair.  We know that our God is a God of more than enough and he will help us become all that we need to be to be victorious and be our best selves!  I am very thankful for another opportunity to share a message with each of you, and I do so in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 582

Tuesday’s Torch 582

April 7, 2020

These last few weeks have been very difficult for many people.  Worries and fear have gripped individuals all over the globe.  Fear does a lot of different things to different people.  I’ve seen fingers of blame pointing this way and that way.  There are those who are taking every warning seriously and others who have thus far chosen to ignore them.

I, and many of us, deal with anxiety already so this entire situation ramps that up.  But I’m trying to stay positive and you can too.

Psalm 121:1-2 says the following:

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.”

These two simple verses are great.  They tell us that we can turn to one who is all powerful.  This isn’t to say that everything is gonna be fine and perfect.  Doesn’t mean we can go out and do whatever we want and have no worries.  But it does show that we can and will be helped.

One who made Heaven and Earth can help us if we let Him.  We have a Savior in Jesus Christ who paid the ultimate price on our behalf.  I’ve stated many times in the past that not only did he suffer for our sins and transgressions, but he has felt our pains and borne our griefs.

So think about what you’re feeling right now.  Does the virus going around cause you to fear, worry or get depressed or anxious?  All of the above?  Or is something else bothering you?

Maybe you’re missing a loved one?  Stressed out about a lost job or afraid of the uncertainty of the days to come? Have emotions that are just devastating, feelings many haven’t had to deal with before.  Help is available.

The Savior felt everything you’re feeling.  He took that pain upon himself during a very infinite atonement.  So that He can help you deal with it as well.

Please join with me in turning all this fear and worry over to God our Eternal Father and Jesus Christ his son.  Let each of us do our part to follow all of the important guidelines being handed down to keep ourselves and others safe.  Let us spend more time in the scriptures and more time in prayer.  Let us ask for the help that has been promised to us.  Let us strive to live righteous lives so that we will be more able to feel the promptings of the spirit.

There is a lot going on right now.  With so many things closed and so much social distancing going on, let us take advantage of the opportunities to grow closer to our Father in Heaven and closer to the Savior. Surely if we have the time to watch some of these wild and crazy Netflix documentaries we have the time to search and study the scriptures and pray to find answers and help that we need?

I would like to close this message with a simple and very brief testimony.  I know God lives and loves us. I know that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ knows us individually and lived and died for each of us.  And that he did miraculously come back.  That he rose again on the third day.  As we all prepare to celebrate what will for many be a very different Easter than normal, let us remember him more fully, and follow him more completely, and turn to him for the help we need.  And I share this message in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Tuesday’s Torch 581

Tuesday’s Torch 581

March 31, 2020

This message will be a relatively brief one. Recently I’ve spent a little bit of time playing a couple games on my phone that my nephews wanted to play with me. One is one of those where you build your kingdom and fortify it with all manner of defenses and weaponry.

So as I’ve wasted some time playing the game, when you are attacked, you can watch the attacker attempt to destroy your castle.  This allows you to make the necessary changes to better defend against attacks.

In life, we are often attacked in many ways.  The adversary has thousands of years of practice to know how to best trick us, confuse us, manipulate us and ultimately control us.  Many of us are aware of the weaknesses which so easily beset us.  Others can be seemingly oblivious to the attacks.  So how do we defend ourselves?

In Ephesians 6 we are given the following instructions:

“11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;”

I could go through each of those piece by piece and discuss how important they all are but I’m not going to do that at this time.  I would like to challenge us all however to look through those verses this week and truly apply them to ourselves and see how we can more fully equip ourselves with the whole armor of God!

I would like to focus briefly on the advice given there at the end of the verses I quoted.  To pray in the spirit and to watch with all perseverance.  We are to continue to pray and how do we best pray “in the spirit“?  Well, we are to live as righteously as possible.  We are to work on all of our weaknesses and our faults and anything that is standing in the way of our ability to feel and be led by the Holy Ghost!   And as we do that, the connection we feel while praying and the guidance we receive will be strengthened,  I know that’s true because I have felt it!

The hardest part?  Perseverance.  It is so very difficult when once we have prayed, many times having received promptings, and then have to patiently wait, and continue to do all that we must do.  But what I’ve begun to learn is that waiting, especially waiting upon the Lord, it’s not a passive thing.  While we wait, we should be dedicated and focused.  We can be more fully arming ourselves with that whole armor of God.  We can learn more truth and practice more faith, we can develop more spirituality and learn more from the scriptures!

God doesn’t want us to just spend our lives waiting for some blessing to happen for us.  He wants us to actively strive to improve and become stronger.  Brothers and sisters, now is a time where most of us are home a lot more, many of us are idle.  Some of us are wasting a lot of time.  Maybe playing silly games on our phones?  Hahaha. Clearly I’m guilty of that to an extent, but let us find the time to be fully equipped for the battles that require us to stay vigilant in order to win.  Let us study the scriptures and find ways to strengthen ourselves and our families.  Let us learn and grow and be able to withstand the lies and attacks of Satan who seeks our misery and destruction.  Let us seek out our Father in Heaven and His Son Jesus Christ who stand ready, willing and able to save us and strengthen us, no matter where we now find ourselves!

May God bless each of us with an extra outpouring of his Spirit to help us make the changes we need to make, to strengthen ourselves in the ways we need to be strengthened, and to be able to be patient, but actively patient!  That is my hope and my prayer for each of us at this time. And I leave these things with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
