Tuesday’s Torch 575

February 18, 2020

Too often we doubt God. Now usually it isn’t that we don’t think he can do a thing, it’s that we know he can, or he could, but we think that he won’t for us. So we sometimes pray to just get by and just survive our trials.

Some of us may be praying to just pass a test or a class, to just do an ok job at work, to manage an addiction.  There are many ways where we are scared to ask God for the best because we think that there is some limitation. Usually a limitation of what we deserve, a limitation to what we mistakenly feel is our low worth.  But God can help us do so much more.

Now I’m not preaching a prosperity Gospel that says absolutely everything we do is gonna turn to gold.  But I am saying that if we trust God and give him the chance to fully bless our efforts, He will make all things possible!

I would like to use the following verses and this interaction with the Savior as an example.  In Luke 9:11-17:

“11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.

14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.

15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.

16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.”

Now, I want us to imagine this.  That’s a lot of people and a small amount of food to begin with.  And not only did God bless them, but even after all had eaten and were full, twelve baskets worth of food was left over!  God can exceed our basic needs.  He has extra.  He shows it and has proven it time and again.

So when you pray and you are working hard and striving for something. Don’t seek to just get by, to just survive. Don’t strive to pass that test, strive and pray to ace it!  Don’t just seek to make it through and do an ok job at work, seek to excel and impress your boss and get a raise or promotion.

Don’t merely seek to manage an addiction or personal weakness, seek and pray to eradicate it!  Overcome it, completely and absolutely.  Make that weakness become a thing of the past to be replaced with a strength!   I’ve seen it happen, it can happen because God isn’t just sitting there waiting to give us just enough to scrape by.  He is looking to help us succeed and excel!  But we have to trust Him.  We have to allow him to work with us and through us.

Now there will be times when we just make it through, when we might barely scrape by.  But I know that often, very often, we can end up with twelve baskets worth of extras.  We are given the help needed to win! Not just hobble to the finish line.

Now this is hard.  Especially as we struggle or we really want something and righteously seek it, it can be hard to work for and pray for something that may seem out of reach or impossible.  Just a couple days ago I received an increase in hope for a righteous blessing I have sought and prayed for with every fiber of my being.  I’m not gonna share what it is here, and it hasn’t happened yet.  And it may or may not.  But I know that God can pour out that blessing in abundance!  And it would be more than enough.  Did God know how much bread and fish it would have taken to feed the multitude just enough that they would all be full?  Yes, yes he did!  But He sent more!  Much much more!

And He can do the same for us.  As for me, I’m gonna make sure my baskets are ready. And I am going to keep working hard and do my part to make it happen!  And when that day comes and the blessing arrives! I will be ready and I pray that you will be too!

Our God is great! And He is a God of more than enough! Far more!  I know that from experience, from the battles and victories He has helped me win!  And there are more to come.  And I am not patting myself on the back.  Because I would fail on my own.  And If I seem to be bragging, I am bragging, I am bragging about my Father in Heaven, and I am bragging about my Savior Jesus Christ.  They make all things possible!  And that, my dear Brothers and Sisters, is the truth.  And I say these things in the name that is more than enough, even the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 574

February 11, 2020

One of the songs sang to me as a child and one I sing to my own children goes like this:  “Jesus loves me. This I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong.  They are weak but He is strong.  Yes! Jesus loves me.  Yes! Jesus loves me! Yes! Jesus loves me. For the Bible tells me so.”

Those words I know are so very true.  When I was a small boy I was subject to several absolutely terrible recurring nightmares that would cause me to scream out at night.  And I can remember my momma singing those words to me to comfort me and help me get back to sleep.  Now is my turn to use it to help my own children get to sleep.  I am ever so grateful that they aren’t subject to the sorts of nightmares I had, and I pray that they never have to deal with that.

This week is a happy week for some and a very difficult one for others.  As everyone reflects on love and relationships there are many who are blessed to have plenty of that in their lives and others who are struggling with the absence of that for many different reasons.

While this brief message will not make any feelings of loneliness or sadness go away, perhaps a little perspective can go a long ways to helping.  You are loved.  Each and every one of you.  By many people that maybe you don’t even know love you.  And you are infinitely loved by your Father in Heaven and by your Savior Jesus Christ.  Read the scriptures, the scriptures tell you so far more completely than I ever could.

Any who are suffering can clearly look up or recite to themselves John 3:16.  And read about the mortal ministry of the Savior.  If you’re struggling to feel loved, please know that you are so loved, that God sent his son to live a perfect life and die for you.  And Jesus Christ was willing and did in very deed do that for you, because of how much he loves you!  And make no mistake, while it was an infinite atonement and makes it possible for all to be saved, it was done for each and every one of us on a singular level as well.  You were and are worth the price!

I will be having my fair share of difficulties these next few days, not to be depressing or anything, just being real.  But I will hold on to that shining beacon of hope that comes by way of my testimony in and of my Savior Jesus Christ, and of my loving Heavenly Father.  I will be forever grateful for all of my loved ones, all of my family and friends.

Truly as we reflect and try to count our blessings, we can feel happiness and joy even in the midst of anything that we may be going through that causes us pain.  Truly we may be weak in so many ways, but never forget that we are not alone and we can borrow the strength that we need from the Savior who stands at the ready to lend us that strength that we may lack by ourselves.

My prayer is that we may remember Him and we may all be healthy, happy and safe. And that we may all focus on things of eternal perspective and be uplifted and inspired to greatness throughout this next week. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 573

Tuesday’s Torch 573

February 4, 2020

From the time I started doing this devotional, I have shared a lot.  In many cases maybe I have overshared.  As I’ve dealt with a lot of difficult challenges I have very often poured thoughts and ideas and inspiration and guidance I received that was applicable to my specific needs in the hopes that they may also help each of you.  Maybe they have and maybe they haven’t, it’s not for me to judge but I hope the messages have been received in love as I intended.

This week will be a bit more of the same perhaps.  As I have been working through each of my weaknesses to try and get rid of them one at a time, one of the biggest ones and hardest ones so far to work through has been anxiety.  I used to think that the amount I worried and overthought everything was normal.  And then when I became a father and that worry went into overdrive and found another level, again I thought it was typical.  It’s apparently not. I mean I overthink so much. It is ridiculous. I’m sure of those who are tuning in, maybe there are others who deal with this issue as well.  If so, please know that I understand, and you are definitely not alone in the fight.

Now as I have been seeking help in multiple ways to take care of this issue I also turned to the following set of scriptures to try and get even more help.

From Luke 12:24-32:

24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?

25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit?

26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”

So in light of those verses I will be attempting to spend less time worrying.  But first off, I don’t feel like these verses are telling us to not be prepared.  It is saying not to worry incessantly or doubt everything and especially not to spend massive amounts of our energy and attention focused on things we can’t change.  The Savior used height as an example.  What good would it be to spend tons of time worrying and stressing over how tall or short you are?  We all probably have our own things we spend time overthinking.  Sometimes they may be trivial but sometimes they can be really big and important things, things that are valid causes of concern or sources of pain.

The main thing to remember is to have faith.  As we seek to serve the Lord and to live righteously, the things that need to be resolved in this life will be resolved in this life, and the things that aren’t will be taken care of when that time comes in the hereafter.

Here’s the tough part though.  That is so much easier said than done.  Especially if you have some things going on that make it harder to relax.  But I know that the efforts we each make to better ourselves and to work through all of our problems, and especially the efforts we make to be righteous are worth it!  May we all focus on those things that really matter and that we have control over.

And all those things we stress and worry over needing, God knows we need those things.  He knows what we want as well. Let us offer up some and even all of our deepest concerns to our Father in Heaven.  After all, He has a much better chance of sorting through all of that than we do anyway.  So let us all practice more faith and hopefully worry a little less.  By all means, fix what you can fix and make changes that you need to make and can accomplish, get professional help as needed, but also trust God to help us.  He knows what we need and He will help.

Of this I testify, In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
