Tuesday’s Torch 565
December 10, 2019
As Christmas quickly approaches, many are caught up in gifts and trying to figure out the best way to show their love to those they care about. We all want to do something special, whether it’s buying a special gift, making something for someone or just spending time together doing something memorable and amazing. Simply put, we want the best for those we love. God feels that way about us and sent us the best gift imaginable, his Son.
He sent His son to atone for our sins so that we might repent and be forgiven. So that one day we will all be able to dwell in his presence. That is what he wants for us. Now I’d like to share a few verses that I’ve shared very recently but here goes:
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Let’s have a little discussion. When dealing with a child, we are often trying to teach them rules. Rules to keep them safe, rules to help them grow, rules to help them learn and develop to their full potential. Simple rules are easiest for children to adhere to. God has given us simple ones. We are his children.
A good parent will always advise their child to follow the rules. God included. The same way that you nor I would tell a child looking up to them to break a rule, God will not tempt us to sin or prompt us to make choices that are contrary to his laws and his rules.
He stands ready to bless us with good gifts and great gifts, all of those are from him, but there is no ‘shadow of turning.’ Meaning, the path to those blessings don’t include unrighteousness at all. God doesn’t lead us astray. He always leads down the straight and narrow.
That path leads to wonderful gifts. May we all embrace living the gospel of Jesus Christ more fully, and enjoy Christmas and all of the holiday festivities. But let us remember all that we have to be thankful for. And if we are tempted to make choices contrary to the commandments of God, let us realize that the scriptures are very clear, those temptations and nudges, can’t be from God. God doesn’t tempt.
And much like a child making a Christmas wishlist or telling that mall Santa what they want, we are given a bit of a choose your own adventure choice of presents. We can receive a good gift, the best gift and receive that crown of life promised in these verses. Or we can receive sin which leads to death.
The choice as with all choices is ultimately ours to make. But it’s definitely important to realize these truths contained in the scriptures which will always lead us to keep the commandments and strive for righteousness. Temptations, well those come from the adversary and far too often, from ourselves because of our own desires. Food for thought brothers and sisters, food for thought.
May God bless each of you with health and safety, and may you be blessed with righteous guidance and direction through all the trials you face. That you may all receive the greatest of the gifts God has to offer is my prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
