Tuesday’s Torch 561
November 12, 2019
In the torch and in several aspects of my life for the last couple of years I have talked a lot about the promises of God and being able to overcome whatever we are faced with. That all things are possible.
I have chosen to share a passage of scripture that I know to be true and that is a huge source of how I know help is available and how I know that mistakes and weaknesses from the past can be overcome to the point of knowing they are gone.
These are words shared by Peter who at this point in time was contemplating his own mortality. And at a time when he was thinking of what he could share and what message he would like to leave, these are the words and the topic he wished to call to remembrance:
The words of Peter 1:1-10 are as follows:
“Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
These words very much show step by step how we are to receive the promised blessings of God and what is needed to have our calling and election made sure. You’ll notice that faith is merely the first of those steps and the qualities we are to build and develop within ourselves. Faith without works truly is dead. For if we truly have faith, our actions will be reflective of that.
On top of the faith, through diligence we are to add virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity (which has been described as the pure love of Christ). As we diligently seek and attain these Christlike attributes surely we will reach that point where we are promised that we will not fall!
I love the comparison it makes between those who develop these attributes as opposed to those who lack them which includes those who start out with faith yet fail to act in order to develop the other qualities and characteristics. Those who have these in abundance are promised to never be barren or unfruitful in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. We will know the Savior and be able to bear witness of Him and share that knowledge with others. On the flip side, those who do not develop these things remain blind, they have difficulty seeing or planning ahead, they forget the very sins that faith was to have purged causing them to fall back into them, throwing away all the blessings they stood to gain by continuing in the way.
Brothers and Sisters, may we all look at these words of the Apostle Peter and receive them as the inspired counsel that they were intended to be. That we may use these words that were so important that he shared them when contemplating thoughts of his own death which he had already been shown was approaching. He wanted all of those who received these words both then and now to know this path and this plan whereby we would not fall and would have our calling and election made sure.
I pray that we all find additional ways to make this progress a priority in our lives. Let us all do this and we will never fall! Jesus Christ has paid the price for all of our sins, and shortcomings and pains and sufferings. He will help us as we strive to develop each of these Christlike attributes: faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity. I know these things to be true and I share that knowledge with you in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Please share Tuesdays Torch and encourage others with it. To partner with Tuesdays Torch and help expand our reach please contact us. We pray the Lord will touch our readers. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God.
