Tuesday’s Torch 558

October 22, 2019

A couple weeks back we discussed light.  And I’ve found myself back to that subject a bit tonight.  So here we go.  The Casting Crowns song “Slow Fade” starts out as follows:

“Be careful little eyes what you see. It’s the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings.  Be careful little feet where you go, for it’s the little feet behind you that are sure to follow.”

These are powerful words to me, especially as a father.  Before I discuss this song, I’ll refer to the scripture that to me goes along with it, well, obviously its kind of the other way around but this is the order I’ve chosen to go with.  Bear with me.

“The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.”  -Luke Chapter 11:34-16

These verses of scripture as well as the words of this song which happens to be one of my favorite songs ever, hit on a very important theme.  We should be careful where we set our sights.  The world is full of so many temptations and so many things that are thrown into our faces.  Images that corrupt and desensitize, media and arguments made that are designed to confuse and mislead those who access them.  Be guarded.  Be careful.  Ask yourself if there is anything uplifting or good about anything you view.

The things we see and choose to let occupy our minds will lead us down a pathway to destruction if we do not heed the counsel to make sure that the light which is in us is not darkness.  This very clearly means that it’s possible to be lost in the dark while thinking you’re full of light. And when you’re not walking in the light, how can you lead?  If you’re wandering in the dark, any who are following you will also be led astray.  The term “the blind leading the blind” definitely is accurate at that point.

So for all of those attempting to lead others, especially those who are leading children, whether they are your own, or someone else’s in a different capacity, make sure you’re walking in righteousness, because you are being followed.  Where are you leading?

There is a very clear process.  Satan doesn’t just replace our light with darkness in an instant.  I mean, he will if he can, but it’s a gradual process in many and most cases.  Like if you put a frog in boiling water he will jump out.  However, if you put a frog in cold water and then gradually increase the temperature, that frog will often stay there until he boils to death.  Near the end of the song it says the following:

“The journey from your mind to your hands is shorter than you’re thinking.  Be careful if you think you stand.  You just might be sinking.  It’s a slow fade, when black and white have turned to gray.  Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid, when you give yourself away.  People never crumble in a day.  Daddies never crumble in a day.  Families never crumble in a day.”

So definitely, “Be careful little, (and big) eyes what you see.”  Let your eye be single to the glory of God.  Do that which is right.  Seek out those things that are righteous.  Don’t spend time considering things that are wrong.  Or you’ll find your light slowly dimming, you’ll become filled with darkness, and the sad thing is, you won’t even know it.

And then when you’ve finally realized what happened, its a hard fight back.  But when you fight the good fight and are once again filled with light, you’ll know the difference.  And you’ll never want to walk in that darkness again.

Take my word for it brothers and sisters.  If you’ve walked in darkness, there is a way out.  Jesus Christ is that light.  If you are already fully walking in the light, congratulations, please continue.  If you’re not sure, well, pray and ponder, read and search the scriptures, analyze every aspect of your life and make sure all is in proper order.

Are you bringing forth good fruit?  I for one, want my children and all those who for whatever reason are following me at all:  I want them to have more light, not darkness.  I want to lead towards God and towards the Savior and towards righteousness, and I believe deep down that is what all of us want.  Am I saying that I’m perfect or that I’ve got it all figured out?  No.  But what light I do have, I pray that I can shine it, and that it may grow.  I hope and pray that for each of us.  No matter where you may be, seek more light, let it fill you, and then shine forth that light.

May God bless each of you.  I share these verses, thoughts and impressions with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.comwe enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
