Tuesday’s Torch 556
October 8, 2019
Two things we aren’t supposed to talk about, as the saying goes, are religion and politics. Those two things I talk about right now. I’m not going to state my political views in this Torch but I will point out this: Everyone is so caught up in themselves and in their own viewpoints that they only want to listen to those who agree completely with them. Those politicians or celebrities who agree are deemed brilliant and so wonderful. But a contrary opinion? They are clearly out of their mind or dumb.
Within religion this is often also the case, even when narrowing it down to Christianity. Many people don’t seek truth, they seek that which agrees with them. Or they play this selective game of which gospel truths are they going to place a higher value towards and which they are going to sweep under the rug. Now, I say they, but I really mean we. I don’t place myself above anyone. I’m as guilty as the next person of wanting things my way.
But anyways, let me share some scripture from 2 Timothy 4:
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.”
We are all, each of us who believe and have come to know the truth, we are called to preach the word. Not sometimes. Not just on Sunday. Not just on Saturday. Not just on Wednesday. We are to seek truth, and to preach it.
It says right there in the verse how people will be. Can you see how that is playing out in front of our very eyes? Just look at the political arena? Look at how the sides fight with each other? Look at all those who only want to hear that which agrees with their personal beliefs.
I will say this and drop the mic or whatever if you will. Actually I’ll keep talking afterwards anyway cause that’s what I do. The truth is the truth. Right is right, wrong is wrong. God has pointed this out in the scriptures. He has pointed it out in the words of His Prophets and Apostles. Sure, we can seek out a gospel that teaches that it’s ok to do this or that, that rationalizes things because in this day and age, it’s just not practical. That the Gospel or at least many parts of it are outdated or unrealistic. That’s the common misconception, that’s what they say if you will.
But we are told to endure. Do what is right. Keep the commandments. Preach the truth. And as we strive to live a Christlike life, hopefully we can exclaim as Paul in these followup verses:
“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
Sisters, Brothers, everyone receiving these words, I know full well how preachy I can come across. But please know this, these messages, no matter how much it may seem like I’m calling others out, I’m calling myself out as well. We are truly in this fight together. All of us. Whether we know each other or not. Whether we like each other or not. We may disagree on practically everything, but God stands ready to help us. God sent his Son for you and me the same.
If you are seeking answers? Seek them. But make sure it is truth you are seeking, and not just what matches how you want to live. The verse says “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine!” How true those words are. Don’t let that be us. And if that has ever been you in the past, it doesn’t have to be you now. Live the Commandments and strive to do that completely. That is the one true and everlasting way to happiness. I say this as someone who is fighting his weaknesses the same as we all are. I will end by saying this: There is hope and help and happiness ahead as we strive to do what is right, at all times and in all circumstances. I share this with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God.
