Tuesday’s Torch 554

September 24, 2019

I’m a little fired up today so we are gonna talk about something.  I’m going to start by mentioning that in the scriptures there are plenty of places that discuss light vs. darkness.  We are going to start in 1 John Chapter 1:

“God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

If we say we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not truth.

But if we walk in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

Now let’s realize we are going to go on a little journey.  And each one of us are somewhere on this path between light and darkness.  So if we look at this, from a starting point, let’s say someone is caught up in darkness; they have a lot going wrong in their life; a lot of sins, shortcomings and addictions.  And usually their friends are the same way, and caught up in all manner of unrighteous living.  So they are in the darkness.  But we are told to seek out the light, because God is light, and if we are going to become closer to him, we are going to seek that out.  So what are ways to do that at first?

Now we all know and have been in a dark place before.  One option occurs as you come across someone who is living the gospel and living righteously and they seem to be bright and full of light.  It can be intimidating.  It could be that person you look at and think, that person is so righteous I could never be like them, they are so wonderful. and you start comparing yourself to them.  And sometimes you can really admire a person, you can think the best of this person but then for some reason you are hesitant to be around them.  Because you realize that you don’t feel worthy to be around them.  You notice all of your flaws and compare yourself to them.  I’m going to tell you that those people aren’t perfect. But if they have this light, since you’re used to being in darkness and you get around this bright person; just think of yourself as an object with a light shining upon it; Then you will cast a shadow, and you’re gonna see that darkness and you will see it so obvious and bold.  And you’re gonna look away, and look down and you’ll see this large shadow you are casting on the ground.  That’s your darkness, your weaknesses, your chosen sins or favorite sin, your addictions or problems.  The things you’re caught up in.  And a lot of people they want to run away.  And Satan is gonna hit you and tell you to run back to the darkness, to get back around what you’re used to.  You can’t measure up to that person anyway.  But that’s a lie that Satan tells you.  Because the good thing about having that righteous friend, if you look at it the right way, you don’t run and hide.  When you look down and see that shadow, you know what to work on.  You know what you need to do to be more like that person.  And another thing is, when you have that darkness there are a couple ways to get rid of that shadow.

The first and one of the ways a person needs to use in the beginning of this journey into the light, you surround yourself with as many sources of light as possible.   I mean you have your own sources of light: you can read scriptures, pray, study, ponder and surround yourself with friends.  Sometimes you have to step way out of your comfort zone and make new friends.

So when you find this group of people with the light of Christi within them,  and you surround yourself with them, and when you are in their presence and the light is encircling you; you won’t be acting out, you won’t be participating in these sins because you won’t when you’re around these people.

This is a really wonderful thing when you’re first starting to try and seek that light.  And as you get surrounded by that it starts rubbing off on you and you start developing more of your own light.  We look at it and yes, we are supposed to seek out good and righteous things, and seek out the light.

But there is a step further.  We are told “ye are the light of the world”.  We are told that in the sermon on the mount.  Ye are the light of the world so obviously we need to go a step beyond.  We go one step beyond simply surrounding ourselves with light.  Because it doesn’t say ‘ye are surrounded by the light of the world,’, but “ye ARE the light of the world.” We are supposed to become that light.  So from the beginning we are caught up in the darkness, and then we may have that one friend that is the light that is kind of shining on us.  Then if we don’t turn and run away from the light, and we start working, we can work towards more truth and more good.

If we surround ourselves with the light, that can kind of take away those bad things, but we can’t always be there.  Sometimes, we are going to be by ourselves, we are going to be alone, and what is going to help us then? We have to become the light by getting it from all these sources.  And become that, and start living those truths. and living the gospel so fully that we are that light.

I heard a man speaking at a church meeting a couple days ago, and he talked about sometimes as you start striving to do things right, you start changing your life, suddenly some of them old friends of yours and sometimes even your family, they turn their back on you because you’re starting to do right and they don’t like it, because you are making them feel bad and guilty, why is that?  Because suddenly you are getting some of that light, and so then being around you, maybe some of the people you used to spend time with, they are not gonna be ready for that.  Suddenly there is this light coming from you, and it causes them to look away and look down and see that they are casting a shadow.  Some people are gonna run from that, and Satan is gonna get on them and tell them that they need to get away.

And you’ll get some negativity there, they will come at you with negativity and it’ll try to steal and rob you of that light you’re getting.  But to be the light of the world, we need to shine that light. And not point it out like “look how much better I’m doing than you.”  Because that’s not our place.  Our place is to be an example in word and in deed.   And we have to be that light so that should that person decide to seek it out, even that person that may run and hide right now, that friend you may lose, that family member whose respect you seem to lose, you’re not losing it.  Because one day when they realize they are tired of being in that darkness, they’ll come to you!  They will know you have the light they are seeking.  So we have to do that.

So for a while you’ll need to surround yourself with these people who are full of the light of Christ. to be able to receive it. You start reading your scriptures and studying and praying.  And you turn away from all the bad you were doing.  You get out of that.  Because it is important.

And once you do that, you can start becoming the light.  Because a lot of times, myself included, there have been times when I’ve tried to reach out to people, I’ve tried to show them the way, tried to guide and direct them, and then I realized something.  You can’t provide light if you don’t have it.  So you have to get it, seek it out, become as enlightened as possible.  and you do that by letting go of all the darkness, and embracing the light, and taking it into yourself.  Because then, and only then, can you help others.  Because you can’t lift people higher than you yourself are. but you can get there, and then you can help lift them up .   So brothers and sisters, I want to say that as we strive to receive more of the light in our life, the light of Christ, as we start surrounding ourselves with people who have it. We start receiving more of it ourselves.  We start living righteously to where we can shine that light.  Because as I talked about casting a shadow,  the ultimate way to not have to look down and see that shadow that you’re casting, is to become a light yourself.  Then that shadow is not there.  But you’re always gonna have the possibility to improve.  There will always be things to work on, you’re not perfect.  There will always be a brighter light.  As we try to emulate the Savior, His light will shine on us, so we are still gonna see that little bit of a shadow, even as we become more of a source of light, we are still gonna see that because that’s necessary so that we can keep working and keep striving to be even better.

But know that no matter where you are on the path, that it is a path, and you can continue to get further into the light, or to go back into the darkness. but we know that the place we need to be is in the light, because that is where God is.  Because that scripture we read earlier it said “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” That’s where we want to be, with our Father in Heaven and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we owe it to ourselves and to all of our loved ones and everyone we come in contact with to be a source of light, and not darkness.

And that is my challenge to each of us, that we may embrace the light.  And then like the song says “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.” It’s not supposed to stay a little light, it becomes a bigger and bigger and brighter and brighter light.  So let’s shine that little light, and let’s make it bigger. and let’s be grateful to our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ for that light. And for the opportunity to share in it, and to become it.  And I share this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 553

Tuesday’s Torch 553

September 17, 2019

Today was a good day.  It just so happened to be my birthday and I had some fun with family. Had a couple nice meals with people I love and I spent the whole day with my kids!   Plenty of people have messaged or called and posted birthday wishes, I am truly blessed.

I have done my best today to keep my mind off of my challenges and focus on my blessings. It’s not always easy but with Gods help it can be done.   As I was reflecting leading up to this birthday I had a lot of mixed emotions.  I’d like to put a couple into words.  I just turned 40.  That feels like such a big number.  It feels like such a big number when I think back on all the friends and acquaintances that are no longer here.

I have a form of muscular dystrophy that is far less severe than the types that have taken the lives of my friends.  Just a partial list, My friends who were more like brothers Tim and Joe, one of my best friends Wade from my childhood, a couple wonderful brothers several years younger than me Christopher and Cameron, my friend Kelly and an inspiring young woman named Joni are a few names that I’ll share out of far too long a list of people that I personally know that didn’t make it to 40, some not even close and had plenty of struggles during their lives.

I don’t know why it was I was given this blessing and so many others that many of them weren’t, but I can guarantee you that it definitely is not an issue of being deserving or not.  And at this point in time not one of them would want me to spend my time simply being sad for them, they’d want me to live my life and make the most of my blessings.  They would want us all to do that.

Now for any who are like me and feel like they are getting older, I’ll just dip into a scripture for a little guidance from Paul the Apostle.  1 Corinthians 13:11

“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”

I can look back and see so much time spent on things of no eternal value.  Note: I don’t consider having fun and spending time in wholesome recreational activities to be bad.  Those times have not been wasted.  But I do recognize the things that are of most value as many of us do and will seek to spend more time doing those things than when I was younger. And obviously I can look back and see the things that I absolutely should’ve never wasted a single minute on.  But that’s been dealt with.

I challenge us all to take a long hard look at the things that occupy our time and see if there are better uses of that time?   Are we making enough time for our families?  Do we have enough time for the scriptures and building our relationship with God?  Are we staring at a phone screen while we let precious moments slip away that we could spend with our loved ones?   If not, if we see that some very important things aren’t getting done because of anything, let us all seek to make changes.

Don’t beat yourself up over past wasted time or sins, that’s not what the gospel is about.  Forgive yourself, repent if there are sins to repent of, and make the necessary corrections.  Correct our thoughts, deeds and actions to match the testimony that we have in our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ his son.

Now is the time to become stronger, now is the time to learn and grow, to be or become the man or woman we are supposed to be. No more excuses, no more “I’m going to change”, no more waiting for something to change before we change.

Now, if you’re listening to these words and you are a child, that’s fine, enjoy your childhood, be a good kid, love God and love the Savior.  But if you’re an adult, especially if you’re a rapidly getting older one like me.  Be an adult.  Get your stuff together if it isn’t, and even if you have your stuff together, strive for better.

There are some things I know for certain, those are that God lives, He loves us.  His son Jesus Christ lives and loves us as well.  Through them we may accomplish all things.  Help is available to all who need it.  I am so thoroughly blessed by my family, friends and loved ones.  My children are the best and they keep me going and keep me striving to do better every single day.  To be an example.

And I will honor those who didn’t get the amount of time that I have already been given in this mortal journey by making the most of it.  By realizing how blessed I really am and it is my hope and prayer that we can all count our blessings and turn to God for all that we stand in need of. But never forget that you’ve got to put the work in, God gave us agency to act and do for ourselves and he isn’t gonna take that away. Want something? Work for it and the help will be there.  God bless each of you and have a wonderful week!  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 552

Tuesday’s Torch 552

September 10, 2019

Hey!  I’m back with another Tuesday’s Torch.  Due to the hurricane last week there was a slight interruption but we are back up and running so to speak. Tonight I’m gonna share a message from the Old Testament, one of my favorites because almost nobody even realizes it is there, but it teaches a good lesson and to be perfectly honest, it’s impossible to read without smiling and almost breaking into laughter.

Ok, the scene:  Balak is afraid of the Israelites and so he asks Balaam to go and curse them so that they won’t cause problems for him.  God tells Balaam not to do it, because they are blessed.   So he refuses to go along with the unrighteous plan.   Balak then sends even more respected princes to meet with Balaam and they offer him riches and honor and all sorts of things if he will go with them and do what they want instead of keeping the commandments of God.  So let’s join the story, we will start in Numbers 22 verse 22 onwards:

21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.

22 And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

23 And the ass saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

24 But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.

25 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

26 And the angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

27 And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Balaam’s anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

28 And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

29 And Balaam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

30 And the ass said unto Balaam, Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

31 Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

32 And the angel of the Lord said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

33 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

34 And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.”

After this he actually went on to go against Balak and do what God told him to do, which was to bless the Israelites rather than curse them.

Some things stand out.  Balaam was willing to say no when the first request was made, because he knew it was contrary to the commandment of God. Yet as the perceived reward of riches and honor were increased, suddenly he started being a little more willing to follow an unrighteous path.

I know I’ve followed some really stupid paths in my life in search of rewards that at the time seemed to be desirable but looking back were just temptations that led me farther away from God and farther from where I should have gone.  But the blessing of the Gospel provides us a way to correct our mistakes and change our course when we go down a wrong path.

And now the part of the story I’m looking at is that, umm, the ass was the voice of reason.  And since donkeys don’t have the reputation of being wise animals, it’s not a stretch to say that the dumb ass was the voice of reason.  And if that dumb ass could be the one to see the angel of the Lord, and see that the path they were following was not the right one; and if that dumb ass could turn from the unrighteous path, then we all have hope. And for that I am so personally grateful.

Now brothers and sisters, I hope you enjoyed this torch.  I hope you got something from it.  And one other thing from this story that I find so crazy.  This dude was so determined to follow the wrong path when his ass began talking that he actually argued with it!   Didn’t freak out and go running away or falling down in shock, he didn’t fall down until he saw the angel.  He just got mad and started arguing with a talking donkey!  Really?    Look.  If God sends you a voice of warning that comes in the form of a talking, dumb ass, pay attention and listen, don’t argue.  Like for example, the torches that I’ve written since I took over for Tim.  Same type of thing basically.  Alright.  Y’all have a blessed week and always make sure you’re staying on a righteous path.  Righteous paths are the ones that don’t require going against the commandments of God.  Trust me on that.  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
