Tuesday’s Torch 550

Tuesday’s Torch 550

August 20, 2019

There is a kids song that most of us know, about the wise man and the foolish man. It talks of building on a rock vs sand.  A lot of people kind of view this song as being one about the difference between believing in Christ vs not believing in Christ.  But if we look at the verses that song is based on we will realize that is not the case at all.  Let us read in Luke 6:46-49:

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.”

So in these verses we realize that both the wise man and the foolish man believed in the Lord to some degree, sought out and heard the instructions given, yet the wise man did the right thing and actually applied the principles in his life. Thereby building upon the rock.

There is so much quickness to accept wrongdoing because “nobody is perfect” or many who wrongly feel like simply believing in the Savior is all it takes. The foolish man in this story though, was one who probably gave the impression of being a believer, but who was not actually living those beliefs.

The verses that we turned to show that If we want to stand strong against the storms of life we have to not just know that God lives and loves us. We can’t just know that Jesus Christ paid for our sins. We need to follow his teachings. All of them, to the best of our ability!  Otherwise, whatever we build will simply be washed away when the storms of life come calling.

So please, brothers and sisters, let us all build off the foundation of living righteously!  Following the teachings of the Savior.  And if you’ve got anything going on that you know isn’t right, fix it or the ruin of your house will be great.  Trust me.  Rebuilding after making that mistake is so much harder than not making the mistake to begin with.  God will help you either way though as we strive to keep the commandments and make righteous gospel-centered decisions.

While this home-building story doesn’t go the next step of saying this, I will point out. Nowhere does it say that this foolish man can’t change his ways. Nowhere does it say he can’t rebuild the house that crumbled by following the proper method of building on a sure foundation of rock by actually doing what the Lord commands. The wise and foolish man in this story can absolutely be the exact same person at a different point in time.

No matter where you may be or what you may be doing, it is never too late to do the right thing and start digging deep and building a solid foundation.  The sooner the better.  Trust me on that.  And I leave this with you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

We pray the Lord will touch our readers. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.comwe enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
