Tuesday’s Torch 543

Tuesday’s Torch 543

July 2, 2019

I have been thinking a lot today about nourishment as I have to always try to find ways to encourage my children to eat a better variety of food and healthier. But who am I kidding, I have to work on that for myself. But as I was thinking of that it led me to consider what we feed our spirits as well.
The same way that the foods we eat can significantly affect our physical health, the things we allow into our hearts and minds can either strengthen or harm us spiritually. I’d like to share the following scripture and then tie it into tonight’s message.
Romans 12:1-2 states.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

This verse talks about our bodies being a living sacrifice. The way to be able to accomplish more in the service of God is by taking care of ourselves so that when called upon we are ready willing and able. I’d like to focus on the spiritual side of this.  Comparing our physical diet to our mental and spiritual diet can be interesting..
We can all instantly think of the foods that are our weaknesses. I got into a friendly banter on Facebook the other day with my good friend Ryan who I’m supposed to be in a weight loss contest with.  Where I was hitting him with images of donuts and other sugary treats and I was able to mention that sweets aren’t really my weakness but that I can point out the things that are. Steak, potatoes, pizza, and ok I’ve gotta stop now.
But how quickly can we point out the things holding us back mentally or spiritually?  What food or content are we devouring.  Are we watching or listening to uplifting things? And I’m not going to point out a huge list of things and say do this and don’t do that. I challenge each of us to decide for ourselves. Are the things you’re putting into your mind inviting the Spirit or distancing you from it?
The times I feel like I am encouraging spiritual growth are times spent in the scriptures and gospel learning. I had a fantastic conversation this evening with a young man at church and it was super uplifting to me and I feel stronger from having a gospel centered conversation.

The times I feel farther from the spirit recently are times where I get caught up in negativity from online, usually getting a little too worried about something posted here there or yonder or some political nonsense that shouldn’t be getting me all riled up and frustrated.  How can I feel the spirit of the Lord if I’m getting all worked up about something pointless? Or about something that doesn’t even pertain to me? Or maybe it does pertain to me but no amount of worry on my part is going to make a difference?

I know I’ve been speaking of these as they relate to myself. What are the things standing in your way of becoming healthier spiritually? What are some things you are already doing pretty well?  Don’t beat yourself up, give credit where credit is due. Be happy about the ways you are having spiritual success. But also strive for more. Strive for better.  Those issues that popped into your mind as soon as I mentioned things blocking your ability to feel the spirit, work on those!  I know we all have them and there are usually a couple that come to mind instantly and others will only be discovered after fixing the most obvious ones. It’s not easy.  It’s extremely hard to embark on the journey to greater spiritual health as we begin removing the bad and adding in more healthy options. In much the same way trying to eat healthy or convince a child to try a new healthy option is a challenge, so is trying what we are discussing in this message. But is it worth it? Yes. Are the rewards waiting truly remarkable? Yes, they absolutely are.  Please spend some time reflecting on this message and figure out how to best apply it to your own personal situation. I know I’ll be reflecting back to see what additional ways I can continue to work on things I already know need improvement and any that come to light through this process.
I pray that you may all be blessed in the ways you stand in need. It is my hope that this message has been of benefit to you. I know that we have a Heavenly Father who loves us. And that Jesus Christ is our Savior. May we always remember that. In his Sacred name, even Jesus Christ, Amen.

We pray the Lord will touch our readers. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.comwe enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
