Tuesday’s Torch 528

Tuesday’s Torch 528

March 19, 2019

Today was a very difficult day for me. Some good parts but other extremely challenging parts. I’ve had lots of regrets about mistakes of the past. Sadness over the consequences for me and others. Things I wish I had known how to fix sooner.  What I wouldn’t give to be able to go back and make some changes. But time travel is not really a thing that we do.

With that said, let us move into the scriptures. In the New Testament,  Paul discusses having a weakness of the flesh that he asked God to remove from him. The response is found in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

I have said far too much far too many times about my issues in the past. I’ve expressed fear that those who know of my weaknesses and mistakes will see me as a hypocrite and thus shrug off any advice that I might give. To disregard what I share because, well, it is coming from me.  To any who are of that mindset, my apologies, but I’m pleasantly surprised that you’re even reading and/or watching this devotional.

But as we read in those words spoken to Paul, God’s grace is sufficient for us. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. As He works to turn our weaknesses into strengths he is able to show forth his miraculous healing powers. Truly all things are possible.

My friend Tim Sader had some tremendous physical challenges. Typing the torch each week had him using an onscreen keyboard and highlighting and clicking each individual key using the computer mouse. Yet anyone who read the torches that he wrote can attest to several things: what a great man, what wonderful words, what an inspiration, and how we all miss him so much.

I’m trying my best to reach out and share positive messages. I’m trying to use the weaknesses and challenges I have overcome and the ones I am still working on as evidence that anything is possible.  It would be amazing to be able to jump on here every Tuesday and with a smile on my face declare how everything has turned to Gold in my life. How all is well and maybe even hop up out of my wheelchair and jump up and down for joy.

But as I used to sing in a silly song I taught to my kids that lists the other members of my family as being able to jump but not daddy, I’m not gonna do any literal jumping. However, despite the fact that I’m still waiting for some blessings that may never come I do celebrate and my soul jumps for joy that God has provided a way for my weaknesses to be made strengths. That one of these days he can manifest his power to others through me. And that he can do the same through you.

Whatever your weakness, limitation, disability, addiction or just anything that you have to work through God can show his strengths through you as you acknowledge your weaknesses, fight through them, overcome them and let your light shine!

We don’t have to give in to our temptations and weaknesses. We can win!Help is available and God will be with us every step of the way. The Atonement is real! The price for our mistakes has been paid. The pain that we feel from them, that pain has already been felt by the Savior. So as you, or me, or any of us feel like nobody truly understands what it is like to be us, there is One who does know. Jesus Christ is our Savior. He is who makes it possible for us to overcome anything that is holding us back!  All things are possible due to his sacrifice on our behalf.

Accept the gift he has given. Repent. Turn to him. Turn your sins over to him. Turn your weaknesses over to him. All your limitations, addictions and burdens, give them all to the one who freely offers to take them for you, who already has. I don’t speak as one who has been able to fully do this. I beat myself up every single day over things I wish I could go back and change. I hope it doesn’t make me a hypocrite. That it just makes me the same as everyone else that is trying their best to make it through.

Join me in renewing that effort to let Christ’s atonement work in our lives. God bless each of you. I leave my prayers that you will be guided and directed to do those things that God would have you do. Be strong in the Gospel! Make righteous decisions so that you may glorify your Father in Heaven. Put him first. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

Tuesday’s Torch 527

Tuesday’s Torch 527

March 12, 2019

Years ago I was making a decision to be baptized. The Holy Ghost confirmed to me that it was the right thing to do. I was being attacked on all sides while making this decision because Satan didn’t want me to make that righteous choice to follow the Savior.  I was baptized and not once have I regretted it.

When I was prompted to move over 2,000 miles away from home to attend college, I decided to act on it. At one of the last possible moments another school opportunity that I had been waiting on to open up, did. However, I knew that while it was a good option, it was simply the adversary trying to tempt me away from doing the thing I knew was right.

I chose to move away from home and attend school. Instead of the certificate I would have earned at the program in my home state, I received a Bachelors. On top of that I received so many blessings by being able to learn and grow. Satan did not want that.

I don’t tell these stories to pat myself on the back. I tell these to point out times that I have actually made righteous decisions that have worked out well for me.

There are many other times in my life that righteous promptings have worked out. Some as simple as acting on the impulse to offer to help someone out. Some of the promptings did not come directly to me but instead were given to me by inspired leaders. Acting on some of that guidance brought me the greatest blessings in my life.  God is righteous. God is good. As we seek to live a Godly life we will be blessed!

Now of course comes the shift in this message. The warning.  I’ve been blessed beyond belief when I have chosen to live righteously. But there have also been so many times that I have went that other direction. Times when even though I knew what would be the right thing to do, I still chose the other path. Many times thinking that it would be ok, it wasn’t that bad, or that I would simply repent later and everything would be ok. I made bad decision after bad decision and cost myself many of my greatest blessings.

In fact, I will say here and now with complete confidence that I have not one time ever been blessed by a single sin I have committed. They have all, every one came back to haunt me. Sure, at the time it can seem ok, sometimes you might even think it is joy or happiness. Yet Galatians 6:7-8 states that we are to:

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

In these verses it clearly points to the lesson that I foolishly, stubbornly and painfully had to learn for myself. Maybe I could have saved myself a lot of pain had I taken this verse to heart years ago. But I didn’t. But there’s always today and there is always tomorrow. For me, for you, for our families.

Be righteous. Be good. Serve the Lord and do things that are pleasing to God. I promise you that is what will bring true and everlasting happiness. Don’t be like old stupid Bobby. Don’t think that you can just do whatever you feel like and it will work out. Don’t think that you can do things that you know are wrong and still be blessed. Don’t think that just because you’re a pretty good person, that people like and sometimes love you, that people think highly of you that you can get away with not trying to do better.

For whatever we sow, that is what we will reap. So what is it we really wanna get out of this garden of life? Cause if you plant righteousness, you’ll get true happiness and joy in return. But if you plant sin or unrighteousness?  Brothers and Sisters, you do not want that harvest. Trust me. You do not want that harvest. Because it is misery and woe.

But I want to end on a positive note. It’s not too late. No matter what you have done, no matter what you are doing right now or what you’ve got planned to do. Turn to God. Turn to the Savior Jesus Christ. Let him have control. If you have to shout “Jesus take the wheel” or put “He Reigns” also known as Our God is an Awesome God on repeat to remind yourself, do it. Turn to prayer. Turn to the scriptures. Turn to repentance. Turn to God, who is your Father in Heaven, and who loves you. He will help you. He will bless you. And when that roll is called up yonder, you’ll be there. We will be there. In the sacred name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 526

Tuesday’s Torch 526

March 5, 2019

I have had a lot of struggles over the past year. I’ve had some significant down moments. I have struggled at times to understand why certain things have happened the way they have, what my purpose is and how I could make the righteous desires of my heart a reality. I’m still seeking some of this information. But as I try to figure this out I need to remember the source of truth. Proverbs 3:5-8 says to:

“5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.”

In those verses we see that it is God who will guide our paths and direct us. And we know that God will only direct us in righteousness. How do we obtain that direction, by standing in holy places and seeking it through earnest prayer, pondering and scripture study. None of these sources are enough by themselves. God gives to those who both ask and listen for the answers but also to those who seek the answers in his words, the scriptures.

I have leaned on my own understanding many times. Other times I have pridefully pitted my will in opposition to the Lords will which has led me to make plenty of mistakes and believe me, there are times I feel like a hypocrite but I would be dodging my responsibility to avoid topics just because I have at times been guilty of them myself.

This portion of scripture tells us not to think too highly of ourselves but to fear the Lord and depart from evil. I think of this version of fear as the fear you’d have of a righteous Father here on earth. Where a child is so longing for praise and would never want to do anything to disappoint him.  He sees us and knows our actions and we want to make him happy. We will be rewarded greatly.

So exactly what is our benefit and what is our reward from following this counsel to turn from evil and put our trust in the Lord by following his teachings completely? We will receive health to our naval and marrow to our bones. We will be strengthened to be able to withstand all the challenges life throws at us and then ultimately the end result is eternal life, the greatest of blessings. We should never allow ourselves to lose sight of eternity. We don’t even need a bracelet to remind us of what Jesus would do if we make righteous decisions that you’d be proud to stand before your Heavenly Father and make.

There are some aspects of that verse that have special meaning to me that I won’t fully go into but they really caused this group of verses to stand out to me.  Some of you will pick those out and others won’t, but my hope is that it gives you reason to read through them and ponder on anything that stands out to you.

It is my prayer that as we seek answers to the questions we have, as we seek guidance on how we are to live and what decisions we are to make. May we seek righteousness, may we avoid evil, may we be granted the gift of discernment to know right from wrong. Always and forever. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
