Tuesday’s Torch 517
January 1, 2019
Happy New Year! I got a suggestion from someone that I love very much on what to discuss for this week’s lesson. If we turn to James 1:5-6 we may read:
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. “
This scripture is very straightforward about seeking answers through prayer. God wants us to pray and He wants to answer our prayers. I would like to look at a couple examples from the scriptures of ways to increase the effectiveness of our prayers.
The primary way that we can help to ensure answers to our prayers is found in 1 John 3:22 “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.” So many blessings are available through us by obedience. Obedience allows us the clarity to receive answers to our prayers as we are able to have the Holy Ghost as our constant companion.
I have at different times in my life poured out prayer after prayer. The times in my life that I have had the most clear promptings have been during the times I was working extremely hard to do the right thing. Throughout the past year as I have worked to put my addictions and character weaknesses in the past, I have received more and more insight.
I feel I should just lightly touch upon a couple things during the remainder of this message. Some people take no thought save it is to ask God without thinking things out in our own minds. It can be an extremely rich blessing to ponder and give serious thought to the things we intend to pray for. Also, upon receiving answer to our prayer, it is a very good practice to write down those inspirations we receive. This not only helps us to remember more clearly but also sends a message to our Heavenly Father that we appreciate and value the guidance received.
The last mention I will make is that of seeking after righteousness. As we pray for the righteous desires of our hearts we will increase our opportunities for help. If we find ourselves seeking after unrighteousness we will quickly feel the heavens close and the spirit will be withdrawn. Proverbs 11 states: “The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.”
In closing, we are to pray with unwavering faith. We are to be obedient, thoughtful and seek after righteousness as we turn to God. He will bless us abundantly as we turn our hearts and lives over to him. God can bless us in ways we do not think possible if we will give him that opportunity. I testify that with God, All things are possible. Might I clarify, all righteousness is possible thanks to the infinite power of the Atonement.
God stands with his arms outstretched to us. We are never too far gone. We are never beyond the saving power of the Atonement. Not as individuals, not as couples, not as families. If you can’t see a way back, don’t fear, God can lead you back from destruction. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
For every one that asketh receiveth; and he (or she) that seeketh findeth; and to him (or her) that knocketh it shall be opened.”
I pray for all of the blessings we stand in need of to be poured out upon us. That the impossible blessings become possible, that our can’t may become can. That our weaknesses may become strengths. This I leave with you in the scared name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God.
