Tuesday’s Torch 515

Tuesday’s Torch 515

December 18, 2018

And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.

Christmas does mean a bit more. I’ve not been super into the Christmas spirit this year. Family issues, financial concerns, stresses and strains have left me quite shaken. I have postponed decorating while hoping and praying for blessings it seems might not come. Waiting for last minute shopping after next payday has sapped some of the excitement.

Things very much aren’t how I had pictured they should be and so it’s been hard to feel like hanging ornaments on a tree. For weeks now I’ve been talking about hope and blessings and turning to God for help. Sometimes the help is strength to endure. I do not say that to suggest ever giving up or that miracles are not on their way. I know that all things are possible and that God loves us and knows what we need.

The greatest gift we have ever been given is the Savior Jesus Christ. Our celebration of his birth now has so much craziness attached to it that it is easy to lose sight of that greatest blessing we were given. Jesus Christ was born in a manger, lived a perfect life, took our sins upon himself in the Garden of Gethsemane and gave his life for us on the cross at Calvary.

That gift allows us to repent of our sins. It allows us to make mistake after mistake, commit sin after sin, and still be welcomed back onto the Gospel path when we recognize our sometimes horrific errors and seek help in making necessary changes.

How eternally grateful we should all be for the gift of the Atonement. The best gift we can give this year is our best selves. We can do all in our power to be better. To allow the Atonement to work in our lives. To break free from the chains that bind us to previous mistakes, ours or someone else’s. We should all know that it is never too late to do the right thing. It is never too late to forgive ourselves or others, to forsake our sins, to do the right thing even when it is hard. Or even when doing the wrong thing seems to offer such promise or reward.

In years past, minor pains and stresses would have led me down a dark path seeking relief and an escape. I thank my Father in Heaven that he is changing me into something better than ever. Sometimes my words may come across as bragging on myself or taking credit for every positive change I have made. But believe me, that credit belongs to my Savior who makes it all possible. I speak of overcoming my challenges not as a way to shout “look how awesome I am “, but to say, “look how terrible I was, and look at how great my God is to save me anyway!” And I testify, that if He can save me, as He has and continues to do, He can truly save anyone or anything we entrust to him. In closing, as we turn to God, as we live righteously despite our trials we may take comfort in this verse: “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” -Psalm 55:22

May God bless and strengthen you. May He heal and comfort you. May He inspire and guide you. And may you feel of His love for you more abundantly, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 514

Tuesday’s Torch 514

December 11, 2018

Christmas is fast approaching. While there is a great excitement and plenty of joy to be found, there is also a lot of stress, anxiety, and headaches. I’m going to focus this message on a great example of God’s love for us. Years ago in a time where passions were high, stress was elevated, political turmoil, religious uncertainty, God proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that He cares for us and will provide that which we need. Of course, I speak of His Son. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

He sent Him to us in the most humble of circumstances, to a lovely young woman named Mary with a righteous man named Joseph being willing to help raise the Son of God.

Christ was born in a manger for there was no room at any of the inns. We have all heard the story of how the King of Kings was born, and how he grew in wisdom and knowledge throughout his youth and into adulthood. He lived a perfect life to be the ultimate lamb without blemish, to take upon himself our sins and all the heartache and pains caused by them, and to give his life willingly to pay that price that we could not pay for ourselves.

God can provide for us the blessings that we sometimes don’t even know that we need. As we live righteously no matter what circumstances we find ourselves in, we prove to God that we are willing to allow His will to control our lives. So often blessings are tied to our obedience. Plenty have experienced the blessings that come from paying a tithe, or seeing that holding firm to keeping the commandments have blessed lives considerably.

So as we look at the upcoming Christmas holiday, remember to stay true to who you are. If you find yourself in a difficult place, God can get you through it. If you have no hope or faith, turn to Christ. He will not turn you away even if all you can do is want to believe. That is enough to begin to develop a relationship with the Savior. He is the greatest gift this world has ever and will ever receive.

May God bless each of you that receives these words. I pray that you can feel of the love descending from Heaven the way that I can. I would not be here if not for the truthfulness of the Gospel which I profess and preach. I know that God lives and loves us. I know that Jesus is the Christ. I know that He lived, died and came back from the grave for each and every one of us individually and as a whole. I know this as clearly as I know my own name. And I share these words in the name of Him we celebrate, even Jesus Christ, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch 513

Tuesday’s Torch 513

December 4, 2018

Bobby Stewart

Last week we discussed how difficult this time of year can be for some people but that nothing can separate us from the Love of God.  Next week we will begin discussing a Christmas theme. However this week, I am going to discuss fear.  I am a fan of Christian music and one of my favorite songs right now is by Zach Williams and is called “Fear is a Liar”.  If you’ve never heard it, It’s worth a listen; and if you have heard it, it’s worth listening to again.

In the song there are many lyrics that describe what fear tells us regarding who we are, our worth and our potential. In the song, you could interchange the word fear for Satan.

If you hear any of the following speaking into your mind you can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that these are not being spoken by our loving God and they are not coming from you.  These lies Satan tells us can sound like:  “You’re not good enough.” “You’re not strong enough!” “You’re not worthy.” “You’re not loved.” “You’re not beautiful.” “You’ll never be enough.”

Or maybe the words sound more like “You are dirty.” “You should be ashamed.” “you should run away” or that you’re beyond the grace of God.  That it’s too late for you or for the righteous desires of your heart.

When we are afraid to try, to hope, to fight for that righteous desire because we don’t think it is achievable, that it’s gone.  It’s not.  It never will be.

When those fears try to bring you down into the depths of despair, turn to Psalms 46:1-3:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.” -End quote  Later in that chapter God tells us to “Be still” and know that He is God. He will help us overcome fear.

In the words to the song I mentioned earlier the results of listening to what fear is telling you is that it will “take your breath”, “stop you in your steps” “rob your rest” and “steal your happiness”.  Do you feel any of these things?  Sometimes I do. I think we all do from time to time. So what do we do?

The song advises that we cast our fear into the fire, because fear, He is a liar.  Satan is the father of all lies.  Let us all stop listening to the lies He tells us.  If your happiness has been stolen, if you feel as though you can’t breath, if you are scared that you are not strong enough or can’t do something, that is not from your Father in Heaven or His Son Jesus Christ.  Turn to God who will strengthen you and help you see your worth.  He will comfort you and help you see the truth.  May we all find the renewed strength required to make it through our struggles and rise to the occasion.  Take back your happiness.  Refuse to fall victim to thinking that anything is impossible.  I testify from personal experience that nothing is impossible when we believe and turn to the Savior for help.  Because He has helped me overcome things that I never dreamed possible, and He will help you.  And that is what I leave with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
