May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. (Proverbs 5:18)
One nice day in late March Sammy’s bestie Kadie came to hang out with her for the day. I had the van at first but when I got home they asked me to go on a friendly lupper date with them. I felt like a privileged man that day with two pretty ladies to hang out with. We ate pizza, went shopping and had a lot of good laughs together. Having a good support system like Kadie and other friends is ideal. We have mutual feelings of affection to build each other up. God is the best friend for us, He will always support us because of His love. Starting in April we started seeing one year ago photos from our wedding weekend. Next was our one year anniversary and an opportunity for us to celebrate all our firsts together. The first anniversary is traditionally the paper anniversary so I wrote a poem about our firsts and planned to relive some of them that day. We celebrated our first talk, first date, first visit to her town, the first movie we watched. That day would be a reminder of some of the firsts that brought us to our first anniversary. For our first talk I bought her some of the favorite candies she told me she likes, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Skittles, Starbursts and red gummy bears. After giving her the poem and this little gift we went and had lunch at Mellow Mushroom because our first date and part of our proposal happened there. After our wedding the top layer of our cake never got wrapped up and put in the freezer which felt somewhat like bad juju. I think we told that story all year but as the one year anniversary approached it made us sad since on our wedding we never even got to eat it. One day I got the idea to contact the girl who baked the original cake and had her recreate the top layer of our cake for our anniversary. She no longer worked from the place we got married at so we met her at Starbucks and she brought our cake there to make a third surprise for Sammy at a coffee shop. When we went back to the house we had some cake then I gave her one more gift to represent when I first went to her house. It was a mini stuffed Timmy giraffe to match her big one and we watched Little Manhattan the first movie we saw in her living room.
Making it one year together felt amazing because we had to overcome many difficulties just to get to where we were. Many blessings flowed from the fountain of our love. My wife is so loving and graceful, her beauty always satisfies me and I’m intoxicated by her sweet love (Proverbs 5:18-19). It seems unreal to me thinking back to where our lives were before we found one another that we would be at that point already. Who am I and my family that God would have brought us so far so fast (1 Chr 17:16)? We are all His children, He loves us and wants the best for every one of us. What is our lot from God above, what is our heritage from the Almighty (Jb 31:2)? If we long to dwell in His tent and seek to find refuge in His wings we will be heard by Him. He will hear the vows we make and give Himself as a heritage to those who fear His name (Ps 61:4-5). The vows we make on our wedding day are blessed by God; they are part of our heritage from Him. Enjoying life with our spouse whom we love gives meaning to our lives. Without being able to love someone the days of our lives are pretty much meaningless. What is our work and toilsome labor under the sun all about (Eccl 9:9)? There are very few things that add meaning and depth to our lives. Loving our spouse and carving out a heritage with them makes our striving worth it. After a year of marriage the two of us realized that nothing else really matters in this world except for loving family and being a blessing in return for the fountain of blessing we have received. One year felt great but every year we can add to that one year shows us just how far we’ve come, how far God has brought us.
Lord we thank you that our fountain is blessed and you have given us a heritage of love and life. Forgive us God for thinking we can find happiness in all the toiling we do without you. Help us Lord to rejoice in the wife we married and in the family you have blessed us with. When we look at our wife my we be intoxicated by the grace and beauty that made us love them in the first place. Thank you for remembering me and my family God and for your love being a heritage to us. Our vow God is to seek you for our shelter because we love you and fear your name. Whatever family situation we are in there is someone for us to love like we’ve been loved by you. May we be faithful to start where we are so that you can take us where we want to be. In Jesus Name, Amen
