Tuesday’s Torch

And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. (2 Corinthians 13:6)

The day after seeing a few houses with our realtor Bob it was the first event of our wedding in which we were preparing for. The bridal shower is a time the bride gets gifts that help her prepare for coming together and making a new home with her husband. The church is in preparations for the bridegroom to come also each of us must make ourselves ready for Him. In March we were getting several hits on people viewing our house. Linda our realtor lined up several showings and we were certain the house would sell before the wedding. Near the end of the month we had an offer on the house that seemed to be a sure thing after they paid earnest money. Since we were certain our house was about to sell we desperately needed to be on the house hunt. We called Bob and told him we had a contract on the house and asked about a few houses we wanted to see. We went ahead and got a room in Summerville so we could have a few days to search. The first day he took us to see a few of the houses we asked about and a couple others that he found. Sammy got brought over to the hotel and rode with us on the house hunt so that she could see the houses too. Most of the houses we were unable to get into so most of the time we sat in the van and waited for mom to see the inside with Bob. One day we went and had lunch before going to look at houses. We looked at a lot of houses that day and it got really warm. This made Sammy hot and riding so much upset her stomach, she got sick, had to wipe off with my blanket and buy a new shirt. The next time we looked at houses we got out and sat in the yard to get a feel for the neighborhoods and this helped keep the car sickness away. The last day looking at houses we did find one that could have worked for us so we put in an offer pending on the sale of or other house. Later that day we talked to Linda and told her we put an offer on a house but she had bad news because the people who bid on our house decided to back out. We were so disappointed when this happened because there wasn’t time for us to get another offer before the wedding and the house we bid on couldn’t be put on hold indefinitely.

When this happened we thought our plans had failed because now for a time after our wedding we would still be living in separate houses. It took faith not to push the wedding day back until our house sold but we were set on not moving it since many people had RSVP’d already. Our failing plans felt as though we studied all night for a test but we failed anyways. Later we found out it wasn’t so bad and the way everything turned out left us feeling satisfied with the journey to get there. When our flesh feels as if we have failed we must look to the Lord, He will be our strength and our portion forever (Ps. 73:26). When we fail looking to the Lord is often the only place left for us to turn. If we find Him we find life and receive favor from the Lord but those who don’t hate themselves, they hate the Lord and find death (Pr. 8:35-36). There is nothing good that comes from keeping the Lord out of our lives. The Lord can make rulers and nobility become like our family. He will bring honor to us when we give honor to Him. When we put our hope in the Lord we will not be disappointed (Is. 49:23). When we are close to God even our human inadequacies do not mean we are failing in life. If we are in His word and He is in our heart we will follow His voice and no word from Him will ever fail (Lk. 1:37). Another thing that we can do is to love and love never fails. Everything we try to do for God will fail if we have no love it will all pass away (1 Cor. 13:8). The only way love fails is if we fail to love. Sammy and I had not failed that test and our love was strong enough that eventhough for a time after the wedding we were traveling a lot eventually we found a house and were able to move.

Lord help us to not be devestated by disappointments, hurts and failures in our lives. Pick us up and dust us off Lord from past failures and let downs. Please speak to us the plan you have God for us because your words will not fail. Be our portion and our strength Lord so that we can find life and be favored by you. Lord you have not disappointed us because we hope in you. We maybe down for a moment Lord but I ask that through you we will discover that if we have breath left in us then we have not failed the test. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch

By: Tim Sader

Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. (Revelation 19:7)

After meeting our wedding planner in January the second important thing we needed to do that year was selling our house three hours away from where we decided to live after the wedding. The Spirit of the Lord will abide in the house of those who are righteous. We are made righteous by loving Jesus and following Him. If we do these things we are wise and blessings will fill our homes. A few weeks after putting our house on the market was the first big event to do with our wedding. It was the bridal shower at Sammy’s sister’s house so getting my mom there was also important. The first few days in Summerville Sammy and I just hung out in her room watching movie to relax a little. Since our house was on the market it felt like time to start our house hunt in Summerville. I had searched online listings every day and found some houses on my own that I wanted to see. I made a list of four houses for us to see and emailed them to Bob our realtor for buying a new house. Two of them had pending offers so he found a few others that he would take us to. That Saturday we picked up Sammy and her nephew Zachary and met Bob at the first house. It was the one I liked most but inside the finishes didn’t have the quality mom was looking for. The second house we looked at was in the ideal location but it was too small and needed a lot of work. We looked at one more house near downtown and looked at a model home in a new neighborhood. After looking at houses we were hungry so we went to a place called Five Loaves for a late lunch. Sunday was the big day for Sammy to have her bridal shower. All ladies were coming to the shower so I didn’t feel right being there but needed help available to me. We asked Zachary if he would come and bring his Xbox so we could play videogames in the room while the ladies did their thing. As things were winding down I joined them; I also brought Zachary his groomsman gift since he wouldn’t be at the bachelor party. I gave him and all my groomsmen one talent of pure silver I bought from a friend who designed a coin for investors. The next day we were headed to York again in hopes our house would sell before the wedding.

One thing about weddings I didn’t realize is the amount of time and energy that goes into making that day great. Part of those preparations is a series of parties that lead up to the big day. These preparations are what the church is working on. We are a bride preparing for the bridegroom and He will not come until we are ready for Him. That is the time for us to rejoice and be glad giving the glory to the Lord. When King Xerxes was looking for a new queen for his kingdom he gathered all the finest women in all the land. Before they could be presented to him they were required to go through 12 months of preparations and beauty treatments. Six month treatments involved oil of myrrh and another six months of perfume and make-up. This is how they prepared a future queen so she could marry the king. When leaving the harem she was given anything she wished to take with her to the king’s palace (Est. 2:12-13). When we are united with our bridegroom our inheritance will be great and it will be ours for eternity. On the lips of the bride is sweetness as a honeycomb; milk and honey are under her tongue. The fragrance of her garments is a smell that we desire (Sg. 4:11). The Lord our groom is waiting for us to talk right and act right so that our aroma is pleasing to Him. Then the bridegroom will come out of His chamber rejoicing like a champion who has run His course (Ps. 19:5). The Lord will rejoice when the church becomes a bride properly prepared for the coming of our King. At the bridal shower we received many nice gifts that would make life a little better when we were finally ready to live together as one. Because of proper preparations each step of our wedding was fun, beautiful and a huge success.

BridalShower 2 22 15 2

Lord help us to rejoice in anticipation of your return by giving you the glory as we make ourselves ready to be your beautiful bride. Lord I ask that you would lead the church into making the preparations that will be pleasing to you. Help us to talk right and act right so that the beauty of our aroma is refreshing to you. You are the champion of our faith Lord. You laid down your life because you love us and want to be with us forever. Help us to do our part so that we will make you rejoice over us. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch

05/15/18

By: Tim Sader

The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous. (Proverbs 3:33)

In January there were many things for us to do in the coming year the first of which was for us to plan a wedding. When we make plans in life it is best for us to include the Lord because He will establish them. If we will be diligent our plans will prosper. That year the second big thing we hoped to do before April of that year was selling our home in York. About five months sooner we got signed up with the USAA Movers Advantage program that helps military families buy and sell homes more efficiently so they can relocate. When we sold and when we bought a new house we also got a check depending on the buying and selling price of our home. Before listing our house we wanted to be looking for a home and getting a feel for the market. We first talked to Bob Curtis who would be our realtor in Charleston when we were ready to find a new house. At that time it was too soon for us to look so he told us to get our house on the market then we could start looking at potential homes. The holidays is not the time, most people aren’t looking to buy a home so we just put everything on hold until the beginning of the year. Shortly after my trip to Summerville for meeting with our wedding planner mom and I had important business to see to with the selling of our old house in York. We lived there for 21 years so we were established there and we adopted it as our home town. A few days after the trip we had an appointment set up with Mrs. Gainey a RE/MAX agent near us. She came out, took some measurements and some pictures so she could write up a quote that would help us sell quickly and make us some money to pay down on a new place. She gave us a list of things that needed attention before we actually could sell the house but we would work on it while our house was listed. We needed to pressure wash the house and deck, paint front porch, paint the door and weather treat the deck. When the inspector came there was a structural issue with the support beams under the house we also had to fix before we could sell. In the next few months we did all those things while she listed the house for 76,000 dollars. About three months later than we had hoped the home finally sold for 72,260 dollars.

This felt like a big hurdle leaving the place that I called home for the previous 21 years of my life. However difficult this was not going was out of the question because I knew it was time to go and I was trading it in on an opportunity for something so much better. I had no idea where we were going to live when we moved to the Charleston area and if we could make it as comfortably as our previous place. Like Abraham though I was being lead to a new place in my life and it meant leaving what was comfortable to enter into the promise of marriage with my wife. By faith we put our house up for sale like we had done for a year the year before I met Sammy when no one even looked at it. We didn’t know if it would sell or how long it would take but we knew that God was bringing us together and His plans will be established (Heb. 11:8-9). Anytime we leave home, mother, father, sibling or children for the sake of the gospel we will receive 100 times more in this age and the one to come onto eternal life (Mk. 10:29-30). I was leaving home so I could be blessed with a wife and she has been the greatest gift in my life. There is a curse on the house of wicked men but the home of the righteous will be blessed. After meeting Sammy my heart was no longer content in York; Lord knows I needed to walk in the blessings He has given my wife and me. Those of us who heed life-giving correction are at home among the wise (Pr. 15:31). This is why Jesus says, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them (Jn. 14:23). The place we call home makes no difference as long as we will heed the teaching of the Lord because He will abide with us. We will be blessed, wise and righteous when we invite Him to be at home in our house.

37_3059519_0_1422381836

Lord I ask that you would help us to be at home among those who walk in your righteousness and for us to do our best to keep all wickedness from entering into our homes. Help us to also heed your instructions on how to do life so that your wisdom will be home to us. When it is time for us to leave what is comfortable to us I ask that we will have the faith to go because we want everything that you have promised to us. We invite you God into our lives and live by your teaching so that we can be a home worthy of your glory. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch

By: Tim Sader

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. (Proverbs 16:3)

It was great getting to spend Christmas with my fiancé and her family. We got some nice gifts that we wanted but just being together was all we needed. On His birthday, Jesus though He wasn’t what people wanted; He proclaimed that He is what we need to be fully refreshed. New Year’s we spent apart because we couldn’t stay in town that long. We missed that midnight kiss again so I decided to send her a giant Hershey’s Kiss instead. For a while wedding planning was on hold after an upset over the dress and the holidays to get through. That year we had a lot to do and the first order of business was coming up with a plan for our wedding. We considered planning everything on our own but Sammy’s sister-in-law Laura offered to be our wedding coordinator and that worked since somethings we couldn’t without help.  This trip to town would include our meeting to discuss the details of our wedding coming up in April. We still didn’t have a wedding venue because none of the places were right for us. Sammy had a dress and someone to customize it to fit her and work with her chair. At our meeting we discussed guest lists and who we wanted in our wedding. We decided to invite 40-50 people each in hopes for around 70-80 guests. Each of us wanted four people standing with us, a ring bearer and flower girl. The colors we wanted was plumb colored dresses and guys in silver tuxedos with purple accents. We chose to have her bridal party wear cowboy boots and me and the groom’s men wore grey skater shoes to represent our different tastes in music. We wanted to have a bridal shower, bachelorette weekend, bachelor party and rehearsal dinner. Music was very important the wedding party walk song was Give Me a Lifetime, Bridal walk was Marry Me by Martina McBride and our unity candle song was A Living Prayer. The exit song was Cinderella by Daughtry, first dance was Golden by Lady Antebellum; we had father daughter, son mother and money dance songs. Laura and her family did all the catering; we had lasagna, salad, bread, and brownies at rehersal dinner. We had appetizers before dinner of pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes and green beans at the wedding. The cake was offered a friends mom but when we finally booked a venue the cake was included so we did that instead. We had 5,000 dollars, we hoped to save some but weddings are expensive and having a bar put us near our budget.

Making plans helped that day be a success and dispite a few mishaps everything related to our wedding was great and we had a lot of fun. When we make plans it is important for us to include the Lord in that process because He is the one who establishes them. He wants to fulfill the desire of our heart and make it so that our plans are successful (Ps. 20:4). This is why commiting our plans to Him is important so He can establish us. We may have many plans in our heart but the purpose of the Lord will prevail (Pr. 19:21). Would we dare to obscure His plans without being able to know everything the way He knows it (Job 38:2)? God knows the plans He has for each one of us. His plans are not bad; He wants to prosper us, not harm us and He will give us a great future (Jer. 29:11). This doesn’t mean He will give us anything we want like some kind of genie. The world gives us certain circumstances that will bring out the plans of God inside of us but it is our job to do the work necessary to accomplish them. The plans of the diligent will be profitable to us just like rushing everything and being impatient will lead to poverty (Pr. 21:5). I think this is why important dates or events are planned six months to a year in advanced. We waited about as long as anyone ever should to plan a wedding but after our engagement we started comparing ideas. Everything was not written down but we knew what we wanted and somehow the Lord helped our wedding plans fell into place.

10659065_962077793405_1657189268043721427_o

Lord help us to be people who are willing to make plans so that our lives have a good profit. The best laid plans are the ones that you have made for us so help us to commit our ways to you so that your plans prevail. I ask that we would not take it upon ourselves to get in the way of your plans without knowledge to back it up. Lord we are getting out of the way by commiting our plans to you so that you can establish them and make us successful in whatever we do. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch

05/01/18

By: Tim Sader

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. (John 7:37)

In November Sammy and I spent three trips together and when Thanksgiving came we felt there was a lot to be thankful for. In a year since we met we were doing what felt impossible to us and we were thankful to all the people in our lives making it possible. It can always be thanksgiving if we will have a thankful heart for everything the Lord has blessed us with. With Christmas coming we had to save up money so we could buy gifts and afford a trip to spend it together. Sammy orders most of her gifts online mostly from Amazon but I wasn’t used to that yet so I only ordered a few movies on there, the rest I bought at store. I mostly went with an owl theme for her gifts because she likes owls. I bought Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole movie, an owl shirt, a desktop owl figurine and a few pairs of silver owl earrings. The main things I remember her giving to me that year was a Sony mp3 player and a Clemson Tigers Hoodie. The main thing we wanted that year was quality time; the gifts really didn’t matter as long as we were together. We booked a room in Summerville for the 23rd through the 26th then Perry and Darleen went to see her son David, his wife Rachael and grandson little David in Virginia and we stayed with Sammy until the 28th. On Tuesday when we got to town we checked in at the hotel then went to Sammy’s house and spent the evening with her and her family. On Christmas Eve Day I hung out with Sammy in her room and we watched Hallmark movies until we had dinner and went to Church. The service was about us not getting what we want but what we need. When Jesus came he really wasn’t what anyone was wanting or looking for but he was exactly what was needed to fulfill the scriptures. After the service we went back to her house to have Christmas with her nephews and exchange a few gifts with Sammy’s sister. I bought them some wine, meats and chesses and they bought me and Sam silly tee shirts we had to wear on Christmas. Mine said Ballin So Hard with Christmas balls on it and Sammy’s looked like an ugly Christmas sweeter. The next day was Christmas so the family got together at Perry and Darlene’s house around noon. We ate and then exchanged gifts and hung out for several hours enjoying family and listening to Christmas music.

For the longest time Christmas for me and Sammy had lost it’s magic because she missed her Mom and I missed my brother. They seemed to be the ones in our families that cared most about the holidays so it just wasn’t the same. We couldn’t have the ones we wanted there but what we needed to care about Christmas again is eachother and together it is special again. Christmas is the day we celebrate Jesus birth but many biblical scalars believe He was born during the Feast of Tabernacles. This makes sense because normally a 9 month pregnant woman wouldn’t be traveling without good reason. She wouldn’t need to be present when Joseph signed the census so the two very likely were during this one trip they were taking (Lk. 2:1-21). If this is when Jesus was born I got to thinking what did he do on His birthday. One year after feeding the 5,000 and walking on water we find out where he was during the festival. His brothers in Galilee wanted Him to go with them to Judea but His time had not yet come. Maybe He was waiting on His birthday so he could go and make Himself known. Halfway through the festival Jesus began to teach and the people were amazed. On the last and greatest day of the festival Jesus stands and proclaims if anyone is thirsty come and let them drink. If we believe He can satisfy our thirst for the Spirit will have living water flow from us (Jn. 7:1-39). This fulfilled scripture where Zechariah said on that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem (Zec. 14:8). Jesus too many in the crowd isn’t who they want but He will always be what we need. The rest of our holiday time together we didn’t do much we only enjoyed time together which was needed for our relationship to continue growing.

TimandSam 12 25 01

Lord help us to use teaching about you to help find what we need even if it means giving up on some of what we want. I ask that we would be thirsty for your Spirit so that you can satisfy us and so a river of living water will flow from us. From that river I ask that others would come to our shores for refreshing and find you too. We ask that the birthday of our Lord be celebrated regardless of what day it was. Help us to see you as our only need until you become all that we ever wanted. In Jesus name, Amen.
