Tuesday’s Torch

04/17/18

By: Tim Sader

They rose about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside. (1 Samuel 9:26)

The day Sammy came to my house in York we had a great engagement photo shoot and had a lot of people come and meet her in a 24 hour period. Having her at my house spoke to me, more than ever before I was together with my true love and nothing could separate us. A week after she came to me her dad and Darleen had an anniversary weekend out of town so Sammy asked if mom and I could come stay with her. When we got to Summerville it was Sunday afternoon we got a bite on our way there but at dinner we were ready for something good to eat. We decided to go eat dinner at Logan’s Steakhouse because they have good steak and things from the grill. At Logan’s they serve peanuts while people wait and there’s a bucket of them on each table. The peanut shells are disposed of on the floor so there is a certain amount of dust that seems to linger in the air. The first time we went there was on her class reunion weekend and I got choked up before we got to our table. I thought I just wasn’t feeling well that weekend since I got choked the next day also. This was our second time going there so I thought surely it was just a fluke last time and I would be fine since I don’t have any known peanut allergies or anything. Again while we were waiting I started feeling choked up by the time we got seated at our table. I ordered food and ate a little but the coughing really ruins my appetite when it happens. After that day we have gotten food from Logans but I am not willing to go inside because twice getting choked is enough for me. When we got back to Sammy’s house mom was getting my machine ready in the guest room and noticed we forgot my sleeping mask. We panicked for a little while but we got ahold of someone at the hospital and got a mask for my machine. The mask worked but was a different design. I used it that night but when I rolled on my back it sounded like a lot of water from the humidifier was in the hose and the mask. Needless to say I had to get up quick and usually it takes an hour or two to clear my head and throat. Shortly after getting up I felt chocked again because of all the moisture backing up on me. After breakfast we talked to respiratory at the hospital and got the right kind of mask which eased the stress on each of us.

Later that day I had to shake extra on my airway clearance system and we tried some Thia food but it was too spicy and I wasn’t hungry. That night I got some good sleep and didn’t wake up half drown. Sammy’s aide Kiki helped her get up and while she was getting ready mom worked on getting me out of bed and feeding me some eggs. After I ate we sat together until lunch time then we had to leave so mom could make it back for her writers group. Getting ready so we could again say goodbye was difficult but we knew thanksgiving was coming and we hoped we could be together again. God wants us to be ready for His command, when he gives us a message to speak we need not fear the crowd because God could give us something to be afraid of (Jer. 1:17). God has not asked us to prepare without Him for the help we need. There are hordes of angels around us wait to battle for us if we will command them to do so (Ez. 38:7). I think often times we forget to believe in the supernatural realm but it is just as real as the physical and we can make things happen there if we will speak into it through our prayers. We must always be prepared to preach the word in every season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction (2 Tim. 4:2). Sometimes we are the mouth piece of God in the circles that we influence this is why studying the word is so important. We need to know what to say and how to say it to reach a lost and hurting world. We want to know scripture in a way where we don’t just quote scripture but so our words to others agree with what we’ve learned. In our hearts we revere Christ as Lord and we should always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks the reason for the hope that we have. We must do this with gentleness and respect so others will see Christ in us (1 Pt. 3:15). Getting ready for the next step means thanksgiving is coming for new seasons in our lives.

Lord help us to be ready at all times to speak according to your word into our circles so that others will know about you. Take away our fear of man Lord because man can do nothing like God could do to frighten us if we lost our respect for Him. Help us to put your word inside our heart so that when we speak that is what comes out. I pray we won’t forget to command the hordes when we pray. When we do talk about you God I ask that we show the world love through careful instruction, gentleness and respect. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch

04/10/18

By: Tim Sader

Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. (Mark 10:9)

It was great getting to spend time with Sammy for her class reunion weekend because it was only a week after I was with her before. It was a struggle because we both felt sick but we went any way and had a good time. When I left her it was in a rush to get home but I learned that it’s never good to hurry along if it keeps us from what is more important. Unfortunately after going twice in September we were unable to travel to Summerville at all in October. Sammy tried so hard to find a way to come to York to celebrate my birthday on the forth but no one was able to bring her to me. This was very sad for her because we wanted to be together like we were for her birthday that year. Since she couldn’t make it in October she found a way to me in November when her dad and Darleen were coming past our town to go to a wedding in North Carolina. She knew for a few weeks that she’d be coming and we wanted to get better engagement pictures so we planned that for this 24 hour quick trip. That Saturday we both put on the same outfits we wore on our actual engagement so we’d be ready to go when she got here. She got to my house at 12:30 that day and we left to meet my friend Cammie at MorningStar around 2:30 so she could take our pictures. MorningStar Church meets at what used to be Heritage USA hotel and confrence center so there’s all kinds of neat areas that make for good pictures. We took pictures with artwork, stained glass window wall, near the trolley on Main Street, a balcony overlooking it, in the library and the beautiful courtyard. Our photo shoot lasted for two hours and was a lot of fun on a cold rainy day in November. After we left there we went and picked up some wings and introduced Sammy to the Anderson family before going back to our house. That night our friends Melina, Ronnie and Kelly stopped by to meet Sammy and hang out for a little while. After everyone left we got ready for bed and slept in the guestroom together. When we woke up she got up and ready first then I got up and had a bite to eat. Janet and Erica came later that morning to meet Sammy. Her dad came at 12:30, him and Darleen stayed and we all had a nice conversation for about an hour before baby had to go.

We accomplished a lot in a very short time but we finally got to be together at my house and that was great. After a month of not seeing one another when we finally had a chance to be together we learned how important just one day could be. Through these photos at the church I was attending I felt more than ever before that God brought us together and nothing would separate us. Sammy and I glorify the Lord; together we exalt His holy name (Ps. 34:3). Our relationship with God is most important and I didn’t think of this at the time but doing our pictures at church was one way for us to include Him in our engagement. It is a good and pleasant thing when God’s people live together in unity (Ps. 133:1). The Lord loves when believers are united together through marriage and in relationship with eachother. In the early church believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to the needy. They continued meeting together in the temple and in their homes they ate together with glad and sincere hearts. They praised God together enjoying the favor of all the people and the Lord added new believers each day (Acts 2:44-47). In Christ the building is joined together to become a holy temple in the Lord. In Him we are built together so that we become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit (Eph. 2:21-22). Together we are a sacred temple of God and if anyone tries to destroy His temple they will be destroyed (1 Cor. 3:17). There are many important virtues for us to live by such as patience, kindness, humility and gentleness that help us when we are together with others. More important than these is love it binds us together in perfect unity (Col. 3:14). Because of real love Sammy and I have a great time together be it just a day or the rest of our lives.

Lord help us to do life right with others and let nothing keep us from living together in perfect unity. Help us to remember that we are built into a temple by Christ with others so that we offer proper support to those we are connected with. When a brother or sister is in need I ask that we would be willing to step up and be the first one to help them. I ask that we would keep our temple clean by living wholesome lives and by showing love to everyone in our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.

Tuesday’s Torch

04/03/18

By: Tim Sader

But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase. (Daniel 12:4)

In September after our short time together when we got engaged I wanted to make it up by staying a full week in September. On this trip we tried finding a wedding venue but none of them felt right so we put that on hold. Christ prepared a place and made a way for us to experience the love of God forever if we will make Him Lord of our lives. After a whole week together we thought we wouldn’t see eachother until the next month. The thing is Sammy’s ten year class reunion was a week later and she really wished I could be there with her. Come to find out her twin sister didn’t care about the reunion and made plans to be out of town that weekend. That opened up their house for that weekend so we were able to stay there again so I would be able to come and go to the reunion with her. When we got into town on Friday we went to Sammy’s dad’s house for dinner. We had roasted chicken, noodles and broccoli then went over to Amanda’s house to stay for the weekend. That night we watched some TV and I slept in the same bed with Sammy again. The next day we went ahead and put on our dress clothes so we wouldn’t have to change into them later. Changing clothes is a lot hassle for us and caregivers so generally speaking disabled people put on clothes and wear them all day even if its fancy evening wear for later. Sammy wore a white and aqua chevron striped dress and I wore kakis with a striped polo shirt. We got some food from Perkins for Breakfast and Chick-fil-A for a late lunch. After we ate Sammy got a sick stomach and felt nauseous, I think this made me nervous so I started coughing. We really struggled that afternoon and honestly didn’t know if we’d make it to the reunion or not. Sammy took some medicine for her stomach and I shook on my airway clearance system then drank some water and got myself calmed down. Neither of us was perfect when it was time to leave but we pulled it together enough so that we could go to the reunion for a few hours. The reunion was at the club house of a golf course near her sister’s house so it was easy to get there. They had a lot of nice hors d’oeuvres and a bar to order beverages, we weren’t well enough to have anything accept water and a little punch. It was great seeing Sammy reminisce: I enjoyed meting her school friends and hearing stories about how they were impacted by her friendship. I felt odd since I was feeling bad and wondered if people were getting the wrong impression of me and if they thought we should get married or not.

I know that kind of thinking was silly but when I am ill I have a difficult time thinking anything positive. It didn’t ultimately matter what they thought because we are trusting God to make this work and inspite of our health concerns together with Him things work out. When we got back to Sammy’s sister’s house it was getting late so we got ready for bed. I used my airway clearence system again because I still felt a bit congested before laying down. On my breathing mask at night I have a way to cough stuff up so by morning congestion from the previous day doesn’t bother me again. At that time I thought talking while doing this made it worse so it made that night a little odd for Sammy and me but we cuddled up and just dealt with it. Since then I learned it was a silly made up rule and it makes no difference if I talk or not. The next morning we got up feeling much better but our morning was rushed because a friend needed mom and me to sit with their son and we had five hours to get lunch and drive four hours. We left Sammy’s sister’s house and picked up some Burger King on our way to drop her off at her dad’s house. In Daniel he sees a vision of the end times and sees many people rushing around in a world with increased knowledge. Compared to ancient Babylon modern times would seem overwhelmingly hurried. Often we walk about like zombies in our own little world rushing around heaping up wealth so someone else can spend it after we pass on (Ps. 39:6). We really just need to slow down and remember what is truly important. The time has come for us to wake up because the day of our salvation is near. We must no longer be in the fog with all our knowledge and dark deeds; instead we must clothe ourselves in the light of our Lord Jesus Christ not in satisfying our flesh (Rom. 13:11-14). To do this we think about what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable—anything that is excellent or praiseworthy (Phil. 4:8). We had a very sad rushed goodbye and we vowed to never do another one like it because our relationship is worth putting more time into.
