Tuesday’s Torch

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

The first trip I took where I had to fly was to Arizona and it was a big success. It prepared me for the next big trip we would take. People with Muscular Dystrophy may live well into their adult years but it causes major health concerns throughout and is considered terminal. Anyone with a terminal condition under eighteen has the opportunity to write a letter to the Make-A-Wish foundation and ask for a wish. I knew about making a wish for some time but a social worker I had in middle school finally got me to write a letter to them. It took awhile to figure out what my wish was I didn’t know if I wanted to meet someone famous, buy something big or go on a trip. I didn’t want to wish for anything stupid so I decided I wanted to go to Australia. When the Make-A-Wish people came to my house they asked my second wish if the first wasn’t approved. I don’t remember what it was because my heart was already Down Under and to my satisfaction it was approved. In March of 1994 we set out for about twenty-four hours of travel. We flew four hours from Minnesota to Los Angeles where we had a six hour layover then a five hour flight to Hawaii. After an hour there we had a nine hour flight to Cairns, Australia which is a tropical area in Northern Queensland. We landed under a full rainbow in a lush green valley right off of the Pacific Ocean. When we were in flight we crossed the date line so we got there on the same day three hours before we left Minnesota. That first day we took a nap when we got to the hotel and went out for some fresh local seafood. The next day we went to a zoo that Steve Irwin’s family owned and got a personal tour from an Aussie zoo keeper and watched him feed the crocs. In between excursion days we got to explore the city, pick up some souvenirs and taste local foods. One day we went on a train in the mountains and rain forest where we saw beautiful waterfalls, all kinds of birds and wild life. We spent the day in the village of Kuranda. Another day we went on a bus to Port Douglas, boarded a catamaran and spent the day at a platform on the Great Barrier Reef. At the reef I got carried onto a semi-submergible so I could see the sights of it below the surface. After nine days in Australia the long trip home was exhausting but it was one of life’s great experiences and a wish came true.

Although Make-A-Wish provided this opportunity to my family we saw that it was a blessing from God. We delight in the Lord and He fulfills the desire of our hearts. The good things that we wish for are the things He wants us to have. Falling a lot, trouble walking, life in a wheelchair and middle school shattered many of the plans I had for life. This trip to Australia was the first time I remember receiving my heart’s desire. I saw that in the darkest night a light is near (Jb. 17:11-12). It pleases the Lord to fulfill our desires and to make our plans succeed (Ps. 20:4). After many hard dark moments in life I had a window of time where my wishes were coming true. As a teen in about a year the Lord allowed for me to provide 15-20 thousand dollars of family fun and memories. The hand of God is open to satisfy the desires of every living thing (Ps. 145:16). He is ready to make our every wish come true and especially so when we seek to please Him.  When we remain in Him and the word in us we will do His will and whatever we wish will be done for us (Jn. 15:7). If we love life and desire to see good days we will keep from speaking evil and telling lies (Ps. 34:12-13). All of us wish to have a good life and a big part of it is learning to say the right things. When we do this the world and it’s desires pass away but when we do the will of God we live forever (1 Jn. 2:17). His desire is that our desires will become what He desires because of His love for us and our love for Him.

What things do we desire? Are these good and pure things God can bless or only to fulfill impure selfish lusts? This isn’t to say God will not give us what we wish just because we want it our desire can’t be for evil. When we want what we want what we speak about our desires often is a factor in whether we get our wishes. When we are blessed whether or not it seems to be God who did it for us it is His hand that satisfies our desires so we should give credit to Him who credit is due.

Lord I ask that you would help us to see the times when in the darkness we learned that a light is near. Show us the times when you blessed us with our heart desire and if we have talked ourselves out of a blessing let us forgive ourselves and learn to speak in a way that is delightful to you.  Help us also to desire what it is you desire for us so we can love you and return to you the one thing you desire from us. In Jesus name, Amen.

We pray the Lord will touch our readers. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.com we enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
