Tuesday’s Torch

02/07/17

By: Tim Sader

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil (Hebrews 2:14)

Spending time with my Aunts and Uncles was always fun but from a young age I had night terrors so sleeping in unfamiliar spaces was difficult. It wasn’t much easier at home but at least it was familiar to me and that gave me a slight level of comfort. When I shared rooms with my brother or a friend it didn’t seem to happen. I remember even on school nights desperately trying to get friends to stay the night. As a child I seemed to be aware of the Spirit Realm and would see into it; be it evil or good. One of the first times I remember this happening I was still in a crib standing looking over the side. I’m not sure if I was crying or not but I could see my parents down the hall in the bathroom. Suddenly I saw four or five little imp type entities. They were colorful, purple, red and green with big heads like goats and small bodies. They danced around laughing and making mischief in my room like belligerent drunks. Thinking back the scene was a lot like the movie gremlins when they were on the loose but that movie hadn’t come out. They did nothing to bring me physical harm but they were foul little creatures and it was traumatic and one of my earliest memories. I have tried to figure out why this happened to me. My parents were new Christians and hardly aware of evil spirits. I have heard there was a lot of drinking and partying in the building where we lived and possibly occult worship. Maybe these demonic spirits were hanging out in a mess of sin or trying to cause me fear to get us to get our focus off the Lord. Sure this could be nightmares, imagination or the boogie man; whatever it was doesn’t matter because it was real to me. Seeing evil entities happened only a few times but the fear it caused was a battle I would fight until my mid-teens. I had to face my fears because I was the only one who could see them so it was my fight to win with spiritual weapons from the Lord.

Jesus shared in humanity so that by His death He would break the power of the devil who had the power of death. He freed all of us who were in slavery by the fear of death (Heb. 2:15). If we believe in Christ by His name we will drive out demons, speak in new tongues, pick up deadly snakes, drink poison without harm and heal the sick (Mk. 16:17-18). When He sent out the twelve Jesus gave them the authority to drive out demons and cure diseases, proclaiming the kingdom of God (Lk. 9:1-2). As a child I had to come against being enslaved by the devils scheme to make me afraid. My parents learned about the authority we have when we use the name of Jesus and they taught me to do this when I felt afraid. We are more than conquers through Him who loved us. Neither death nor life, angels nor demons, the present, future nor any powers in all of Creation can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ (Rom. 8:37-39). Knowing that Jesus loved me and that there is no fear in perfect love made me aware that I didn’t have to be afraid (1 Jn. 4:18). Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. This is why we put on the armor of God so that when evil comes we can stand our ground and keep standing through the battle (Eph. 6:12-13). This was another element of spiritual warfare that I was taught so I could be confident to stand up to fear. The other thing I learned is that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7). I learned this scripture, quoted it thousands of times, spoke the name of Jesus and put on my armor to stand firm against the fear that tormented my childhood until I had victory over it.

We may think our fears are too real for us to gain any kind of victory over them. Today we name fear with different names and the unexplainable we give labels of mental illness to. These things become very real monsters in our lives and begin to change us into their image of how we should do life. I feel the Lord is saying that fear comes in many forms and may have different names but He recognizes it in all its forms. He knows the struggle is real when no one else does and He provides solutions to free us from whatever it is that makes us afraid.

Lord we ask that we would look to you and your word for the weapons we need to face fear in its many forms. Help us to remember that you became human and shed your blood that was innocent so that the enemy would no longer have the power to make us afraid. We place our lives in your hands Lord because we know you love us and your love is perfect enough to drive away all our fears. In Jesus name, Amen

Every Tuesday we talk about what He did and is still doing. The best thing God’s done is send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will invite the Lord into their lives by asking Him to forgive their sins and believing that He is the Son of God. Please share testimonies, feedback or encouraging words by email at: tuesdaystorch@gmail.com we enjoy hearing from you. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
