Tuesdays Torch week 380

Tuesday’s Torch

04/19/16

By: Tim Sader

Then I will go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre, O God, my God. (Psalm 43:4)

Last week we learned about the living Spirit of our God who gives us life and a reason to live. We praised Him with the song Spirit of The Living God by Vertical Church Band. We should go to the altar of God because we joy and delight in Him. This is the attitude we should have when we praise Him with our songs. Our song today will be O Come to The Altar by Elevation Worship. The link to this song is https://youtu.be/ycWDFd0yCHA or search for the song title and artist on YouTube. In what way are we hurting and broken within? Are any of us feeling overwhelmed by the weight of our sin? Jesus is calling us to Come to The Altar. If we feel like we are at the end of ourselves or simply thirst for a drink from the well; Jesus is calling out to us. At the altar the arms of God are open wide because forgiveness of sins was bought with the blood of His Son Jesus. Christ restored the means of communication between us and God so we can boldly approach His throne. The altar of God is that place we go to meet with Him to have a one on one encounter that will make a change in our lives. Many of us take our problems and concerns to the altar but this is because we don’t realize going to the altar is about making a sacrifice. I think this is also why initially we are unhappy with the results of close encounters with God and feel like the rug has been pulled out from under us. But many believers have stories that the greatest glory comes out of surviving the greatest challenges. The Father’s arms are open when we Come to The Altar because of Jesus sacrifice. But what are we willing to give on the altar to resolve our issues according to His plan?

When Aaron went to the altar it was to make sacrifices for many reasons; one of which was to make atonement for the sins of Israel (Leviticus 9:7). This was accomplished by the continual sacrifice of livestock so blood could be shed for the forgiveness of their sins. This was still inadequate because only the high priest could come into the Holy Place once a year to make petitions for the sins of the people. By this the Spirit was showing that there was no way into the Most Holy Place while the temple was functioning. When Christ became high priest He went through the tabernacle not made by man and He made atonement once for all by shedding His own blood for our eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:7-12). Without the shedding of blood there would be no forgiveness. The tabernacle on earth was a replica of the one in heaven so when Christ died and entered into heaven to be He presented Himself to God as our everlasting sacrifice (Hebrews 9:22-25). We need not be carried away by strange teachings but to accept the grace we’ve been given and not by eating ceremonial food, which is of no benefit to them who eat. We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat (Hebrews 13:9-10). We can Come to The Altar at all times because Jesus saved us from sin once and for all. Abraham was considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar. His faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did (James 2:21-22). Since Abraham took action and was willing to make such a sacrifice we must be willing to do something before, at or after we go to the altar. When we offer a gift on the altar if we have unforgiveness toward anyone we are instructed to make reconciliation first (Matthew 5:23-24). Since our high priest has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. We can Come to The Altar of God with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:15-16).

Tuesdays Torch week 379

Tuesday’s Torch

04/12/16

By: Tim Sader

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. (Psalm 84:2)

Last week we learned that we need to trust everything in our lives to the Lord especially when it’s tough. We praised Him with the song Trust it All by North Point. Trust it all to God is easy to say but not so easy to do. We say we trust God up there in the sky somewhere and we’ll meet Him at the end of our lives. This is the wrong image of God because He’s a living God who’s not waiting for us to die before we find out about Him. If we’ve waited that long to let His Spirit move in our lives it’s probably too late. Our soul yearns to be in the house of our God; our heart and flesh cries out for the living God. Today’s song will be Spirit of The Living God by Vertical Church Band. The link to this song is https://youtu.be/ZPZrxZgQjrg or search for the song title and artist on YouTube. It is the Spirit of The Living God whose voice we should open our ears and heart up to. We should be hanging on every word of the Lord because His word brings life. Only a living God can give life to all of creation. When He speaks, moves and does what only He can do in our lives it changes what we see and who we seek. His Spirit removes fear, brings us to tears, to our knees and we will fall at His feet. I am familiar with His Spirit because very few things bring me to tears so I know when I cry it is the Spirit doing work in me. I can be overcome by emotion in sad and happy times but extreme emotion does work in us too. If nothing else it keeps us aware that we are not without the need of God in our lives. Mostly the Spirit of The Living God is alive and active, bringing change and giving us something to live for.

Do our souls thirst for the living God? If so when can we meet with Him (Psalm 42:2)? The soul of every man is thirsty for something but we don’t always fill it up with God. Often we drink of the pleasures, lust and sins of this life filling our souls with all kinds of evil. If our cup is filled with Him then it is easier to meet with Him. It seems that the more we are filled with Him the closer we will come in our fellowship with Him. Just as our flesh needs water our soul craves a drink from the living God. When the king saw that Daniel had been delivered from the lion’s den he changed the law about worshiping other gods. He realized the Spirit of The Living God rescues, saves, preforms signs and wonders in heaven and earth because Daniel was saved from the lions (Daniel 6:26-27). When Jesus asked His disciples who they thought he was Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:15-16).” Only the Spirit could reveal that Jesus is the Son of the living God. In the temple age the blood of goats and bulls along with the ashes of a heifer were used to sanctify those who were unclean. How much more will Christ’s blood without blemish became our sacrifice through the eternal Spirit cleanse us from all our sins? Now we can serve the living God with our own lives (Hebrews 9:13-14). We labor for Him because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe (1 Timothy 4:10). It is with our own lives in service to the Lord that helps others see His salvation in us. We are like a letter from Christ, the ministry of others wrote on the tablet of our hearts not with ink but by the Spirit of The Living God (2 Corinthians 3:3). So let’s see to it that we do not have a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. Instead let’s encourage one another everyday so our hearts are not hardened to change from the Spirit of God doing His work in us (Hebrews 3:12-13).
