Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. (2 Samuel 7:28)
Last week we learned about a place where we stand on what we believe with the song Faith is a Place by Jordan Rubin. It is great to have a God who will give to us out of the good He has for us. His covenant with us is completely true and He will give us the good things He has promised. The song we will praise Him with today is Every Good Thing by The Afters. The link to this song is https://youtu.be/FY2ycrpbOlw or search for the song title and artist on Youtube. In this song we learn that the Lord is the reason for good things in our life (Psalm 16:2). Every heartbeat, breath, laugh and second chance are good things God did for us. It’s family, our friends, a smile from our wife or kids and everything else we love that we been blessed with. Sometimes we get to busy and take for granted the wonderful life God has given us. We forget to look around and see Every Good Thing that God has done for us in this life. God promised good things to David His servant but this message is true for all who serve Him and we can trust His word. Some good things in my life are my life, waking up to my wife, a nice new vehicle I can use, a beautiful new house and food in my cabinets. I am grateful I have help for all my personal needs so I can remain an active member in my home and community. The best good thing in my life is the Lord because not even life itself can happen if He didn’t give it to us. He not only made us exist He gave us a second chance when we messed up everything good by sinning against Him. We praise Him because of Every Good Thing He is still doing in all of creation.
The Lord has stored up an abundance of good things for those of us who fear Him, giving them to us because we take refuge in Him (Psalm 31:19). Those who serve the Lord and have a close relationship with Him will experience His goodness. He satisfies us with good things when we hunger and thirst for Him to respond to us in such a way (Psalm 107:9). When we are hungry for something or thirsty we cannot live without it. If we pursue the Lord with that kind of intent we will see His goodness everywhere around us. Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing it benefits those of us who will walk in it (Ecclesiastes 7:11). True wisdom comes from God and if we follow it we cannot go wrong. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him (Matthew 12:35). If we remain close to God and fill ourselves with His wisdom we are choosing the good path and good things will come from us. The law of God given to Moses was just a type of example to us of the coming sacrifice, it was not reality. For this reason the same sacrifices repeated every year could never make perfect those who draw near to worship the Lord. If it was so perfect sacrifices could have stopped being offered. Worshipers would have been fully cleansed and would no longer feel the guilt of their sins (Hebrews 10:1-2). But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with human hands and is not part of this creation. He did not have to enter by the blood of goats and calves; but He entered the Most Holy Place once and for all by shedding His own blood so that we could be redeemed from our sins (Hebrews 9:11-12). Every Good Thing means nothing if Christ hadn’t saved us from our sins. All the good things that God has done for us how can we not give back to Him through our acts of praise and worship.
