Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. (Psalm 103:20)
Last week we continued our year of worship with the Song of Bless the Lord by Leonard Jones. We learned that our sacrifice of praise is pleasing to God; it is how we Bless the Lord. In the verse above David makes reference to the mighty angels who do the work of God and obey His word. David envisions or instructs the angels to praise the Lord. Angels are a great benefit to all believers; we have the right to call on them to be our help and this is a reason to praise the Lord (Hebrews 1:14). All the hosts of heaven, all who do the Lords will are told by David to praise the Lord (Psalm 103:21). We do not know the exact number of angels in heaven but there is an entire army of them. Today’s song is God of the Angel Armies by Jonathan David Helser. The link to this song is https://youtu.be/SQWE0YhFQkg or search for the song title and artist on Youtube. When king Aram was at war against Israel all his plans got messed up because God revealed them to Elisha and he told the king of Israel. King Aram accused his officers of being spies for Israel but they let him know it was the prophet Elisha. He was furious and demanded to know where to find this prophet of God. He was in Dothan so the king sent out an army of strong men to capture him. When Elisha’s servant looked outside the next morning he saw the army had surrounded the city. The servant cried, “Oh no, what should we do?” Elisha answers “Don’t be afraid, those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” He then tells the Lord to open the servant’s eyes; when he looked up the hills were full of Angel Armies and they were surrounding Elisha (2 Kings 6:11-17). The Angel Armies were sent by God to protect Elisha from the army of men sent to capture him.
Just like God did for Elisha we have access to Angel Armies; they are all around us, keeping us safe so we can do the work of the Lord. He will command His angels concerning us to guard us in all our ways; they will lift us up in their hands so we will not strike our foot against a stone (Psalm 91:11-12). This is the same passage of scripture the devil used in the wilderness to see if Jesus would test God to see if the angels would save Him. I bring this up because the devil was an angel so he knew that there were angels that would save Him if they needed to. How much more should we believe it if the enemy knew it was a reality? After Peter attacked the temple guard in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus rebuked him and reattached the guard’s ear. Then He said, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels (Matthew 26:53)?” Jesus knew legions of angels would fight for Him if He gave the command for them to. A legion at that time was about 1,500 men so that would be 18,000 angels ready to go to war for Jesus to protect Him. Angel Armies will protect us if we will call on them when we are in trouble. Jesus could not call them at that time because it was not the will of God for Him to stop from going to the cross. In the last days there will be war in heaven. Michael and his angels will fight against the dragon and his fallen angels (Revelation 12:7). To have war there must be Angel Armies prepared to do battle. When Christ comes with His robe dipped in blood to rule and reign on earth the armies of heaven will be with Him on white horses (Revelation 19:13-14). Praise the Lord, God of the Angel Armies will fight for us; they are all ministering spirits sent to help them who inherent salvation through Christ.
