The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God and carefully follow them… (Deuteronomy 28:13)
Last week we discussed our future if we are zealous for the Lord, not envious over sinners and trust in the word of God. There is no hope of a future for the wicked but peace can be found if we will follow the plans of the Lord. He will make us the head not the tail if we careful follow His commands. God will make us the top dog and not the lowest one but we must do our best to respect what he tells us to do each day and not turn from it or worship gods (stuff) that isn’t Him (Deuteronomy 28:13-14). This is part of the blessing we receive from devoting our lives to the Lord but if we will not follow Him foreigners in our lives will rise higher above us and we will made low. They will be the head and we will be the tail (Deuteronomy 28:43-44). We cannot exalt ourselves or we will be humbled but if humble ourselves before the Lord we will be exalted. The Lord is the one who humbles and we can only truly be exalted by Him. That is why to be the head and not the tail we must carefully follow His commands. In Him we are made something but without Him we can accomplish nothing good. His commands are not meant to restrict us from everything they are given to help us grow up into everything He wants us to be. God’s people are not meant to be tailing behind just going with the flow of the world around us. We are to rise to the top of the areas we influence and take that territory for the kingdom of God so He can be exalted. He is the head and not the tail because when the end comes He wins and His name will be exalted.
How do we be the head and not the tail? Moses asked the people, after they were told by the Lord they would die in the wilderness, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed (Numbers 14:41)! Israel after being confined to the wilderness for forty years thought they would call the Lord on His words to them by trying to face the Amalekites after the fact but it was too late. Moses asked them why do this now without the blessing of the Lord; he knew that now it would not succeed. We must be quick in following the Lords command if not we will not be exalted in doing what no longer has His blessing. David inquired of the Lord if he should pursue the raiding party and the Lord told Him he should and that he would succeed (1 Samuel 30:8). Inquiring the Lord is key to everything we do and will determine our failure or success in doing whatever it is. When the wicked plot evil and devise schemes against us especially in our mission from God they will not succeed (Psalm 21:11). Plans often fail because of the lack of counsel but with many advisers they succeed (Proverbs 15:22). We should seek the advice of godly men and women we trust in making big decisions we are unsure of. Also the Holy Spirit is our counselor and He will show us the way we should go. Jesus told the twelve disciples that, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all (Mark 9:35).” Being the head does not mean we become puffed up and arrogant; it means we don’t forget to be a servant of all. We must bind love and faithfulness around our neck, keep them on the tablet of our heart. Then we will find favor and a good name in the sight of God and man (Proverbs 3:3-4). To be the head we must not forget to love and be faithful to God and man in all that we do. If we stand firmly in the Lord and fully give ourselves over to His work in our lives we will have victory over the law, sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:56-58). Following Jesus is the best way for us to be the head and not the tail; if we do this we will win in this life.
