Tuesdays Torch week 346

Tuesday’s Torch

08/25/15

By: Tim Sader

Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people. (Philemon 1:7)

Last week we learned that it is important for us to make positive changes in our lives that bring us closer to the Lord. His wisdom brings us to a better place of goodwill in our lives. In life when we are down, sick, after we do difficult things or begin to feel burned out we need something to help us get back in the swing of things. We need to be restored to our former state so we can continue the journey we are on in life. Refreshing comes in many ways; it can be as simple as an ice cold glass of lemonade after working in the sun or that dream vacation to somewhere exotic after 10 years at the same boring job. Some people enjoy comfort food, meditation, exercising, a good book, tv programs and movies or just taking a thirty minute nap. Being refreshed is no new concept; it is part of the creation story. In six days God created the heavens and earth but on the seventh day He rested. God did not need to rest but He knew we would need relief from our toil so we have the Sabbath day for a needed break from all our striving. All the ways above may bring temporary relief but we can only truly be refreshed by seeking the Lord and helping one another when we get beat down. There is great joy to be had when we are refreshed by the Lord and when we refresh the hearts of other people.

The law of the Lord is perfect; it refreshes the soul. He can be trusted one hundred percent of the time; it makes wise the simple (Psalm 19:7). When our soul needs refreshing if we will seek to learn His word the refreshing we need will come. The Lord sustains His faithful ones on their sickbed and from their illnesses (Psalm 41:3). There are many benefits from knowing the promises of God. He refreshes the weary and satisfies the faint (Jeremiah 31:25). When we hit rock bottom it is not hopeless. As a matter of fact it is the place for us to press into the Lord and let Him do His refreshing in our lives. Everything we learn from the Lord about His ways are meant to be the message we carry with us to share with others both in word and action. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed (Proverbs 11:25). When we love others it not only brings joy to our spiritual mentors but to the face of God. Refreshing them brings refreshing to us like we could never experience by being selfish. When someone is caught in a sin we don’t turn and walk away from them. It is the job of those who live by Spirit of God to restore them gently and watch ourselves so we won’t be tempted to sin also (Galatians 6:1). This is no easy place for maturing believers to put ourselves in and when we start thinking we are without sin we are lying to ourselves. We are not above the one caught in sin and it should be our desire to lift them up and not leave them behind. God forbid making their sin ok by us entering into it with them or in secret to know what they are into. We should have no casualties in the body of believers. Like the Marines believe, no man left behind, this should be our motto when a child of God stumbles and falls. Sometimes we suffer for the faith but only for a little while and the Lord will restore us; making us strong, firm and steadfast (1 Peter 5:10). We must be reminded of these things even if we know it and are firmly established in the truth we have received. It is good for us to refresh our memory in all truth as long as we live in this body (2 Peter 1:12-13). We will be refreshed when we learn the word of God and seek His truth; also refreshing others will restore our soul.

Tuesdays Torch week 345

Tuesday’s Torch

By: Tim Sader

Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright. (Proverbs 14:9)

Last week we learned how the Lord leads us and if we follow Him we will be on the path that was prepared for us. His way is the way of peace and is refreshing to our souls. Over the weekend my wife and I had our friends come to the house to help us make a few changes to our house. They helped us put up a ceiling fan, clean up the yard and extend our front patio so we could better facilitate it. We are making several more changes to the house in the next few weeks and months but they got us off to a good start. This process of remodeling the house got me thinking about the changes we have to make when Jesus becomes Lord in our lives. When we make amends for sin fools mock us who are living according to the world and its ways. However those who are upright and living for the Lord find goodwill when they change their ways. It is sensible to be wise and give thought to all our ways but deception is a fool’s folly (Proverbs 14:8) Fools think that changing our ways to serve a God we cannot see is foolishness but in reality we know the opposite is true. There is great wisdom and it is well with those who trust in the Lord. There is no one like the wise or those who know the explanation of things; wisdom brightens the face of people and changes their hard appearance (Ecclesiastes 8:1). Knowledge truly is power and that makes us feel good and secure about ourselves. God has all wisdom so when we make changes according to His wisdom we are making amends for our former appearance and goodwill is evident on the face of those who are among the upright.

We must be willing to change our ways by justly dealing with others, not oppressing the foreigner, fatherless or widow, by not shedding innocent blood and not by serving anything as a god in our lives that is not God the creator of the universe. If we do these things we will be open to receiving whatever has been promised to us by the Lord (Jeremiah 7:5-7). Jesus tells us that unless we change and become like little children, we will never enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3). What are the ways of children? They are simple, naive, have an imagination, innocent, and have dreams, goals and blind faith in what they know to be the truth. We can only change and become this way when we submit to God and trust Him to do the work in us that we cannot do on our own. We can no longer be conformed to the pattern of the world but be transformed by renewing our minds to what Gods good, pleasing and perfect will is for our lives (Romans 12:2). We must learn to submit to God, resist the temptation of the devil and he will flee from us. Also we must draw near to the Lord and he will come near to us. We must wash our hands and purify our hearts in Him to be free from the burden of sin. By changing our foolishness into humble submission to the Lord, He will lift us up (James 4:7-10). There is a mystery: We will not all sleep, but will all be changed in a flash and in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet. At the trumpet the dead will be raised imperishable and we will be changed (1 Corinthians 15:51-52)! We are already citizens of heaven so we eagerly wait for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who by the power that put all things into subjection to Him, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body (Philippians 3:20-21). Changes whether they are to our house or to ourselves are meant to be an improvement to what was already there. That is what our friend Jesus does for us when we make Him the Lord of our lives.

Tuesdays Torch week 344

Tuesday’s Torch

08/11/15

By: Tim Sader

I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say. (John 12:50)

In the last Torch we finished our God trait trio; Jesus is the way, truth and life. The life we live is short and trivial; we can only find life in Jesus who is the giver of life eternal. To readers who were waiting for last week’s message please forgive me for the delay. I was moving into a new house and had no access to the internet for more than a week. This is an exciting mile stone in the journey the Lord has had me on in the last three years or so. After getting sick and dangerously thin when my brother passed in 2011; God has been showing me His love and goodness. In 2012 I was turned down for two surgeries that another doctor recommended that I have to help aide me with breathing and eating. They recommended that I continue using non-invasive breathing assistance and start eating more protein rich foods. I gained 40 pounds, have maintained my weight ever since and have been enjoying my food again. In 2013 a friend of mine, Julie noticed we needed a new van and God placed it on her heart to help us get one. We planned an all day festival, with 8 bands, BBQ and children’s activities to raise money for a van. The news even got involved and somehow that year the Lord led ten random people to pay for mine and my mom’s dinner when we went out to eat. We ended up with an almost new Toyota Sienna van and the state paid $25,000 to modify it to fit my specific needs. Right after getting the van I received a message on eHarmony from the woman who is now my wife. One reason our long distance relationship was successful is because of the van I was blessed with. If I couldn’t have made a dozen or so trips to see her we would not be married and living in the same house.

The point of this story is not to brag but to say God led me for the past four years to bring me to the place I am currently at today. The Lord leads all of us; if we will submit to Him His commands will lead to eternal life. We do this by following the Lord Jesus and doing only what God is leading us to do. Because of His righteousness He will make our way straight before us (Psalm 5:8). This is where I found the path I been on, each day I devoted to Him and my path was laid out before me. Without major obstacles He put the pieces together and here we are today. His way is beside peaceful streams and is refreshing to our soul (Psalm 23:2-3). When we are on His path we will fell peace even our soul will be refreshed when struggles come. Learning the way of the Lord is how we come to find the straight path and escape our oppressors (Psalm 27:11). On the right path the enemy cannot easily oppress unless we stray away from it. If God is our rock and fortress for the sake of His name He will lead and guide us along our path (Psalm 31:3). From the ends of the earth men and women call on God; we call on Him when we grow faint and weary. He leads us to the rock that is higher; to a safer place where the enemy cannot be (Psalm 61:2). In 2011 God felt like all I had left to stand on and without Him I seriously doubt I would be writing this today. I called on Him when my heart was faint and He led me out of the pit of despair to one of the happiest places I have ever been in my life. Let the bridegroom lead us to the banqueting hall and let His love the banner covering us (Song of Songs 2:4). The Lord led me to the alter with my now wife and He leads us still after putting us  together under the same roof so we can enjoy life together with the  Lord. He will lead us all on a journey to wherever we are going if we follow His call to live righteous lives.
