Matthew 6:16

“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Last week we learned about the gift of Holy Spirit and the way He leads our lives with the power of God inside us. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will lead us into doing a fast to get a breakthrough for an issue in our lives. I have done many fasts through the years for different reasons and have seen more prayers answered during fasts than without. I’ve seen friends figure a mysterious illness, people let out of jail, leaders of countries established, a new van, a relationship ended and a new one sustained. Many of these I prayed for before I fasted but during my fasting suddenly the answers just happened. When fasting we shouldn’t grudgingly do it by being gloomy to get attention by doing this we have received all the reward we will get. When we fast we should take care of ourselves and go about our day like we would if we weren’t so others don’t know we’re fasting. Only when the Father sees us doing this in secret can He reward us according to His will (Matthew 6:16-18). God does not want us to fast just because that is the thing to do; rather He wants it to be for an appropriate reason. We fast to loose the chains of injustice, break every yoke and set free those who are oppressed in some way. Our works should be good when we fast; we should feed and clothe the poor and not turn away our family’s needs. Then the light inside us will break forth like the dawn, healing will come quick, our righteousness will appear and the Lord will have our back. We will call on the Lord and He will answer when we call on Him to be our help; He will answer here I am (Isaiah 58:6-9). If we have a certain need that is according to Gods will there is no better way to get it then by fasting and asking God for it.

When Jesus laid hands on a boy possessed by an evil spirit He lifted him up by the hand and instantly he was healed. The disciples couldn’t figure out why when they tried healing the boy they couldn’t cast the spirit out of him. Jesus told them the kind of spirit it was could only come out by prayer and fasting (Mark 9:27-29). Some situations need extra convincing to be resolved; this extra is gained by fasting. We proclaim a fast to humble ourselves before God and ask for a safe journey for us, our children and all our possessions (Ezra 8:21). When we return to God after being away from Him we should dedicate our heart to Him; with fasting, weeping and mourning. How we fast is completely between us and God. Some fasts are just for an appointed day or length of days, a part of a day or un-appointed length of time. When King Saul died the men who took care of him and his son’s burial fasted for seven days to morn their tragic deaths (1 Samuel 31:13). In a vision Daniel saw a great war so he mourned and fasted for three weeks. He ate no choice foods, meat or wine and used no lotion until the end of three weeks (Daniel 10:2-3). Daniel fasted twenty-one days to see breakthrough but on his fast he gave up what was most important not all eating. Jesus fasted from food and maybe drinking for forty days because afterward He was hungry (Matthew 4:2). While worshipping and fasting the Holy Spirit set Barnabas and Saul apart to do some work. Afterward they placed hands on them and sent them out (Acts 13:2-3). Paul and Barnabas appointed elders through prayer and fasting before committing them to the Lord (Acts 14:23). When we need a breakthrough, are troubled in spirit, committing someone or us to the Lord fasting is the way to get the best results.

Tuesdays Torch has an official website http://www.tuesdaystorch.com The Daily Spark and Scripture Pictures are further spreading the message of Christ. We have accepted the opportunity for Tuesday’s Torch to be in Redeemed the Magazine for prisoners. The founder and author of Tuesdays Torch Tim Sader, has spoken in church and has several speaking engagements lined up for the future. We pray the words of every Torch will sink into the hearts and minds of readers. Please share Tuesdays Torch and encourage others with it. Recently we partnered with leisurelane.wordpress.com please check it out and send them some love. Any ministries or blogs that would like to partner with Tuesdays Torch please let us know. We pray the Lord will touch every reader. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk a little more about what He did and what He is still doing. The best thing God has ever done was send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will meet the Lord. If anyone wants to make Jesus Christ their Savior send a message to: tuesdaystorch@gmail.com and we will pray together. Look out for next Tuesdays Torch on our website, by email, on Facebook as Tuesdays Torch or Twitter @tuesdaystorch Thanks and God Bless!

No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
