Tuesdays Torch week 309

Tuesday’s Torch

Joshua 24:23

“Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

Last week on Thanksgiving we learned about being thankful to God at all times, for everything He has done and for those we share our lives with. Part of being thankful is turning our backs on the foreign gods of stuff, sin and self that we used to serve. We do this when we yield our hearts to the Lord; God. In America for the most part we have no concept of foreign gods. Native Americans for the most part worshiped the spirits of living creatures, ancestors and the Great Spirit. Some tribes were into divination, practiced voodoo and black magic. The peaceful tribes had an easier time accepting Christianity there were parallels between God and their creator. The tribes who we’re warring fought hopeless battles to the death and made settlers fear them all which led to the slaughter of many. Early Americans would not yield to their gods and even sent missionaries to the tribes to make converts. Without much knowledge of foreign gods we have not thrown away the objects that we’ve made gods in our lives. Ashtaroth was a small wooden god of fertility that could be easily carried and worshiped. If a block of wood that had no purpose was a god how much more can money, beer, TV, video games, computers, tablets and smart phones become our gods. These things in their own power if used correctly are not evil but if our lives are yielded over to them more than to God; they are our gods and should be thrown away or used properly. What we yield our lives to determines the kind of harvest we yield.

There are two definitions of yield we will be discussing today. One is to give up possession of on claim or demand: as to surrender or submit to another. Often times other people will entice us to participate in wrong doing and worship other things that we’ve turned into gods. We are told not to yield to those gods; not giving up possession of our spirit by submitting to another. We should not participate because we feel sorry for them or shield them by making excuses for their wickedness (Deuteronomy 13:6-8). By throwing away all other gods and yielding ourselves to God means we give up and surrender it all to Him. The other definition of yield is to bear or bring forth as a natural product especially as a result of cultivation, to produce or furnish as return or to produce as return from an expenditure or investment as profit or interest. God sends rain in its season so that the ground and trees will yield their crops (Leviticus 26:4). When the land yields a harvest it is God blessing us (Psalm 67:6). We cultivate our lives and yield a harvest from the seed we sow. The folly of fools yields folly (Proverbs 14:24). A persons wisdom yields patience; it’s our glory to overlook an offence (Proverbs 19:11). When seed is planted among thorns the plant will be choked out. This is the word that is heard but the concerns and desires of the flesh come and choke it out so that it is unfruitful. Seed that falls in good soil produces an abundant harvest these are the ones who accept the word and yield good fruit (Mark 4:7-8). Instead of practicing unrighteousness we should yield to God and let Him use us as instruments of righteousness (Romans 6:13). Because of our flesh we were servants of iniquities but now as servants to righteousness we yield holiness (Romans 6:19). If we plant seeds of righteousness and are yielded to God our lives will yield holiness and other good things.

Tuesdays Torch has an official website The Daily Spark and Scripture Pictures are further spreading the message of Christ. We have accepted the opportunity for Tuesday’s Torch to be in Redeemed the Magazine for prisoners. The founder and author of Tuesdays Torch Tim Sader, has spoken in church and has several speaking engagements lined up for the future. We pray the words of every Torch will sink into the hearts and minds of readers. Please share Tuesdays Torch and encourage others with it. Recently we partnered with please check it out and send them some love. Any ministries or blogs that would like to partner with Tuesdays Torch please let us know. We pray the Lord will touch every reader. All of what Christ did was so we would believe. He told us not to believe because of what He said but in what He did (John 14:11). Every Tuesday we talk a little more about what He did and what He is still doing. The best thing God has ever done was send His Son so we could be saved (John 3:16). If anyone is not a believer we pray they will meet the Lord. If anyone wants to make Jesus Christ their Savior send a message to: and we will pray together. Look out for next Tuesdays Torch on our website, by email, on Facebook as Tuesdays Torch or Twitter @tuesdaystorch Thanks and God Bless!

No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. Luke 8:16
