Throwback Thursday

Week 23

By: Tim Sader

John 8:36

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Last time we discussed how to stand firm in the Lord and how to stand on His promises to see results in our lives. Before we can stand we must learn to be obedient to the Lords voice and calling on our life. To be obedient might mean we need to take some kind of action not just sitting around praying about it. The Lord sometimes wants us to stand up and be obedient to what He asks and our obedience the Lord sees and we get what we were Standing for. To Stand in the presence of God we must come to Him with a pure heart and conscience, not submitting to idols, and not following what is false. When we do what is right in His sight we are redeemed and will receive the blessing He has in store for us. As believers we are to stand on Christ and His teachings even to the end of this world. We should stand firm in what we believe because of what Christ did to give us freedom from sin. Since we have been given this freedom we must always stand in it so we do not let ourselves become slaves to sin again.

When we accept Christ into our lives we are gaining freedom from a life of sin and death. By Standing on the power of his sacrifice we have been set free and are no longer in bondage to the powers of the enemy. When we were set free we must stand on the promises given to us by his sacrifice so we will not find ourselves bound again to sin (Galatians 5:1). When we are saved and receive this new freedom it really don’t matter the situation we are in, we should always try to make it better and with Him we can. If we are bound to a type of slavery we know that in Christ we are free but also we must realize to be free from the world we must become willing to be slaves by obeying his voice and call on our lives (1 Corinthians 7:21-23). Even creation is seeking freedom from the bondage of decay that will not be made perfect till the children of God are revealed. When we suffer we must remember we suffer for freedom and when that freedom is manifest in us His glory will be revealed and all creation will celebrate. All we must do is chose to be given freedom in Christ and walk according to the plans of the Lord (Romans 8:18-21). When we chose to follow the Lords agenda by submitting to him and standing on the truth we are then in his freedom and will experience the greatness of our God.

To be given freedom is a privilege but not everyone experiences this freedom in the same way. Some remain bound to old religious traditions, doctrine, beliefs, and principles that may or may not make them weak in the context to the freedom we have been given. Please read 1 Corinthians 10:23-33 it explains how to experience freedom but not cause others to stumble because of your freedom. Notice that discretion is important because we know right from wrong and should never seek our own good at the cost causing our fellow believer to stumble. In the times of old what people ate was a big deal because it was the law but others not influenced by these law believed that if God created it then it must be good. So if an unbeliever invited us to a meal and informs us it was offered as a sacrifice he may expect us not to eat and by doing so his conscience will be at ease because we didn’t eat. However if you are trying to show respect to your host and eat anyways and thank God for it why would that cause them to stumble? Whether we eat or not isn’t the issue but whatever we do, do it for the greater glory of God so we don’t cause others to stumble. By remembering to do well in the sight of others we are remembering them so they may be saved and enter into freedom with us. It is true we are called to be free because of what Christ did on the cross but we must not take this freedom to the point of taking part in our sinful nature. Instead we must be willing to serve and show love to our fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord. Love is the greatest command so we must make it priority or our quarrels will destroy us (Galatians 5:13-15). When we read the word it should reflect into our lives, love is the fulfillment of the perfect law so when we walk in love we walk in freedom. When we are diligent and do what God tells us to we will be free and blessed in what we do (James 1:23-25).

Isaiah receives a prophecy telling of things yet to happen many hundreds of years later when the Lord will send His son to save the people and set Israel free (Isaiah 61:1-2). After those several hundred years Jesus opened the scroll of Isaiah and read what it said. After reading it he rolled up the scroll and told the people, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus told the people the prophecy was about him it didn’t go over so well but notice he came to set the captives free (Luke 4:17-19). What do you need freedom from today? Whatever it is look to Jesus because He came to set us free. God sent his son to be a sacrifice to all so that through the church God would become more real to all authorities in heaven and earth. Nothing could stop Christ’s love for the church his mission was to restore man’s relationship with God so we could have the freedom to communicate with God and have confidence in doing so (Ephesians 3:10-12). When we approach the Lord says, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” When we accept Jesus as our Lord and savior his spirit comes to live inside of us so He is always with us. Everything He has and all of His power is on the inside of us. His sacrifice made us free and with his Spirit in us we walk in freedom (2 Corinthians 3:17).

If Christ is inside us then people should notice him in how we act and no one will be able to speak against the power manifest in us as true believers in Him.  We are to live in this wonderful freedom not to cover up our evil but so we can show the world we are servants of God.  We need to always show respect to others, love our spiritual siblings, fear the lord and always honor him as our king (1 Peter 2:15-17).  We need to act right and treat others as the Lord says by showing them mercy, treating them with respect and loving them as Christ taught (James 2:12-13). If we treat others unfairly then we will be shown that kind of judgment but by walking in the laws of God we have the freedom to be saved from our wicked ways. When Jesus went to that cross and died for our sins he set us free from the bondage of sin and death we were trapped in.  He set us free from sin, free from sickness and disease, free from poverty and free from every attack of the enemy.  Believe in this freedom, stand on this freedom and fight the good fight for this freedom today and every day.  It is true what the scripture says, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”  Today is the day to claim your freedom not so we can do what we want but so we can serve him better and receive all good gifts from Him especially our Salvation.  Claim your freedom today it is yours in Jesus name!  Obey his word, stand on all his promises and walk in freedom. Be free today and every day because Christ set us free!
