Throwback Thursday week 21

Throwback Thursday

Week 21

By: Tim Sader

2 John 1:6

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

I was having an interesting week when this was written. My battle with chest congestion landed me in the hospital for five days, I just needed a little extra help but as we learned last week, this battle was not won by medication; though man’s God given knowledge helped. This battle was won in the spirit; God knew I was winning even in my weakest moments while being sick. His hand was leading the hands and minds of those put in my path to see me through this tough time. This sickness was taken from me long before my body knew it was better. My battle was not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. As Ephesians 6:12 says, the hand of God in the heavenly realms won my battle. When I was at my weakest the good Lord made me strong. So I got out of the hospital and got back to my daily life. It was difficult because of being stuck in bed for five days. The truth is I needed a vacation to recover from being stuck in that place. While in the hospital I did get to spend a lot of time with the Lord and being built up by the people I love. I experienced sadness, loneliness and just wanted to have my life back. I spent mother’s day in there but and I got to spent it with my mom those who meant the most to me. On our way to the cafeteria a cleaning lady talked to me in the hall and we got to talking about the Lord and this bible study, the first day I left my room the Lord guided my steps to that woman just to remind me of his goodness. Later that day the Lord began reminding me of something he had been pulling on my heart to do to have a blessed relationship with my girlfriend in 2009. We decided to be obedient and we were blessed until we grew apart.

Leviticus 26:3-5 says, “if you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land.” When we are obedient to the Lord and follow His commands He will see to it that we are blessed with everything we need. He will feed us and bless our harvest, keep us safe and bless our land. We may not have harvests of fruit and vegetables so much anymore but if we will be obedient the harvest we are waiting for will come to pass. Deuteronomy 28:1 says, “If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.” If we obey the Lord and do what He wants we can be set high above the nations. The Lord loves obedience and when we obey Him He will greatly reward us. Colossians 3:20 says, “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.” Obedience is an elementary concept and is important to learn even as children. Honestly it is the main requirement for a child to live a life of blessing for the rest of their lives. Ephesians 6:1-3 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise— that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” There are obvious reasons why it is important for children to obey parents because they know what’s best for their children to keep them safe. Just as parents know what’s best for their children our heavenly father knows what’s best for us. He will keep us from harm when we obey Him. Just as obeying parents will lead to a long life if we continue in obedience to the Lord we will continue to be blessed.

When expected to obey we are not asked to obey because of an obligation but to experience love. Today’s scripture says, “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.” When we walk in love we are being obedient to what the Lord commanded us because as we know loving the Lord and our fellow man is the greatest commandment. A way to show love to the Lord is by being obedient to his command and walk in love. Romans 16:19 says, “Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.” Obedience will cause joy in our lives and the lives of others around us because your obedience brings blessings. They will experience joy because only in love can we be wise about what’s good and innocent about what is evil. In life we are all obedient to something. People are obedient to all kinds of things such their jobs, spouse, friends, lifestyle or the law. People sometimes become slaves to what they obey most and let those things rule over them (Romans 6:16). We must be careful what we chose to follow. Is what we follow leading us to sin, which then leads to death? Or are we being obedient to God so we can be made righteous? The choice is up to each one of us when we obey God we reap all the blessings He has for us by being in right standing with Him. Joshua 24:15 says, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve?” It is our choice to obey the Lord and live a blessed life or to serve the world and fall by the waste side, you decide.

In Romans 5:19 it says, “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.” The disobedience of the first man, Adam we were all separated from God and made to walk in sin. Adam’s disobedience maybe brought sin into the world but each of us makes our own choice to obey the sin or to obey the voice of God. Christ made that choice possible by laying down His life in obedience to the Father so we could chose blessing not the curse. Disobedience to God is dangerous and always causes us to fall; so what the Lord says should be considered serious business. If we truly believe when He speaks to us we should gladly obey and know in our spirit blessings are on the way. Hebrews 5:7-9 says, “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” When Christ walked the earth He was constantly praying and crying out to God because He knew only God could save Him from death. By His dedication to prayer and obedience to God to die a horrible death we were saved. Through suffering for us Christ learned the power of obedience so we should obey Him because He obeyed the Father.

1 Peter 1:2 says, “All who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.” As believers we all have been chosen by the Father through the Spirit and because of our obedience to follow His voice and believe He died for us on that cross we are saved. If we continue in this obedience and continue listening to His voice I am certain we will enjoy all the goodness He has for us. He promises grace and peace in abundance when we are obedient to His voice in our lives. When He speaks to us and we know it is the Lord we must be obedient, trust in him and know what he asks is for our own good so we will not fall into sin. Remember delayed obedience is disobedience so listen when He speaks!
