Throwback Thursday

Week 9

By: Tim Sader

Luke 12:25

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?

Friday the 13th is just like any other day to me since I wasn’t raised to be superstitious.  My mom happened to be born in January on such a date and nothing bad ever seemed to happen so we never gave Friday the 13th much thought.  This 13th does not really change my opinion of that day but coincidently some strange events unfolded just a few doors down from where I live. A woman with some mental conditions locked herself in her house with enough nitro glycerin to do some severe damage.  It caused quite an uproar of police and emergency personnel who had to shut down a couple streets.  A friend of mine came rushing in my house telling me about it so I hurried off to his house to be out of harm’s way.  When we found out who had the bomb we really started thinking there was no way she’d have something like that.  Finally when the bomb squad was called out we heard a loud ground-shaking explosion so after being freaked out and running outside we realized they were only disposing of the bomb, we never believed existed.

Now I’m not saying this happened because of some urban legend of what date it was because God is above all of that.  However after this happened I became more and more anxious as the day moved on and my mind had time to dwell on the day’s events.  Soon everything that could go wrong did go wrong, the neighbors kept bothering me, I kept getting stupid phone calls, when I decided to make a call the phone that charged all day was dead and I couldn’t hear out of the other one.  By the time I laid down to sleep I was so worked up my adrenaline was flowing, head was spinning and heart was beating so fast I almost thought I was having a panic attack. At that moment I realized the very real harm that our neighborhood had faced that day and though I was not dwelling on the circumstance fear had time to set in.  Then as my pastor Rick says fear is quickly replaced by rage, which makes you lash out in anyway possible.  I realized becoming worried opened a door to the enemy so I immediately prayed about the situation and remembered to plea the blood of Jesus over my loved ones and me.  Soon I was completely calm and peacefully asleep unmoved by the circumstances of the day.

Early one morning I had a dream about a crow feeding on road kill and for some reason we were trying to pet it but the bird showed no sign of fear by fling off.  This scavenger bird had no worries he kept doing his thing despite our human intrusion.  This dream leads me to the section of scripture where I found today’s verse.  Crows and ravens are the same kind of bird and Luke 12:24 says, “Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them.  And how much more valuable you are than birds!”  If this crow in my dream could be eating without a care in the world not knowing when his next meal will be, then we need not worry about anything.  The Lord is saying if the birds do not have to worry over feeding themselves then we being his children should not have to worry about anything. In Luke 12:22-23 Jesus is telling his disciple not to worry over their life, food or clothing.  What I Believe Christ is saying here is, don’t worry about a thing I am already taking care of that.  Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”  Christ was telling them, focus on me and I will be your provision.  In him there is more then enough.  John 10:10 tells us he came to give us life and to give it more abundantly.  We should not worry about our life because Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life.

People tend to get worried over many things.  Ecclesiastes 2:22,23 tells us about toil and anxious striving (worrying over our jobs).  This happens to many people, their work causes them pain and grief, some may even lose sleep because of it.  Verse 23 says it is meaningless; to live we must work and today many cannot find jobs so why worry if you are blessed to have one.  Matthew 6:34 tells us, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”  Even in the worst situation you could imagine we should not worry.  When we chose not to worry we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us carrying away our trouble and giving us peace. When we become worried life wears us down and nothing seems to go right just as I became worried on Friday the 13th.  When this happens we need to build ourselves up by talking to the Lord or a friend who will build us up with kind words (Proverbs 12:25).  By seeking the kingdom of God all our needs for food, clothes or shelter will be fulfilled (Matthew 6:33). When we are worried about anything we are told to pray about it, giving thanks for what he’s about to do.  We are to bring our requests to God not to sit around and dwell on it, if we need it let him provide it.  We have no reason to worry because the God of peace will protect our hearts and minds, taking away our worry if we choose Christ (Philippians 4:6-7).

In Luke 2 is the story of when Jesus got separated from his mother and father it says, they were anxiously searching for him.  In verse 49 Jesus says, “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”  Right now Christ is in the father’s house, seated at his right hand preparing a place for us who believe.  We must seek first his kingdom and all our needs will be fulfilled.  When we desperately seek we will find he is in the Father’s house ready to give us his peace. Now I ask as in today’s verse and beyond: Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?  Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?  If we are not in control we should realize we can do nothing to prolong our life only God can determine that.  If only he can know this simple thing then truly what else is there for us to worry about.  I encourage you to seek the kindness of Christ and his Sacrifice, ask for things in his name when worry comes your way and watch your worry become peace in Him.
