Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.
Last week we learned about what Jesus said about us opening our minds to Him instead of filling it with the things of this world. Sometimes we miss what the Lord is doing because our minds are waiting for Him to show up in familiar ways but the truth is He is waiting on us so we will notice Him every time He shows up so we can have an intimate encounter with Him. After Jesus rose and Simon realized he seen Him on the road; when Christ appeared to the twelve they still thought He was ghost until they felt His wounds and started to believe. Finally when He ate they all were sure of His rising and He showed them what He fulfilled in the scriptures this opened their minds and they better understood the Scriptures. Them seeing Him freed their minds so they would know He had truly risen so they could carry that testimony to the nations so they could be saved. The Lord He goes everywhere with us but often times we don’t know it’s Him walking with us because we are preoccupied or trying to decide whether we heard Him or not either way we missed Him when we let our mind get in the way. The Lord has transformed our minds so we do not have to think like the world thinks when we open our minds to Him He shows Himself in us because in Him nothing is impossible. We are in Christ so we have new minds since in Him we are made new so our minds are transformed when we learn who we are in Him and who He is in us. We were made new when our sin was crucified with Him our flesh was crucified it died and we no longer live life in the flesh the life we now have is in Christ so our minds are in Him by the faith we have knowing that He saved us. We got new minds if they been renewed in Christ because He loves us and wants for us to be like Him knowing the truth of who we are and who He is in us.
When we make promises or swear an oath that we are going to do something we do not know what might happen to keep us from doing that thing and when we cannot keep our word it makes us look bad because we had to lie. We should keep our speech and answers simple so we will not be guilty of breaking an oath and making it seem that God lied. Matthew 5:33-37 says, “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” We have no real control over what happens in heaven, on earth or anywhere else we cannot even control our own life so how can we swear by something we cannot control. When we keep our answers ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ we break nothing but our own word but we have not broken an oath we swore to keep in the sight of God making you and Him both a liar. When we do answer yes or no it is important that we keep our word since all a man has is his word if we have to say more our word don’t mean much because it should speak for us and if it does not mean anything it’s evil. Today’s verse James 5:12 says, “Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.” By our own words we are condemned so if we swear an oath we cannot keep and make God out to look like a liar, we are condemning ourselves we swore by something we could not control and if we cannot keep our oath we are condemned by breaking it. A Yes or No answer is best you are not guilty to anyone or anything but you and since you control yourself if you lie and are condemned it is your own sin and we can take it up with the Lord.
Isaiah 43:12-13 says, “I have revealed and saved and proclaimed— I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses, ” declares the Lord, “that I am God. Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?” God in many ways has been revealed to man He can be seen throughout all of creation, He sent His Son to save us so that by faith we would proclaim that He is our God. We have been witnesses of God there is none greater than Him so what He says is what will happen no one can reverse His hand when and where He moves it to. So when God makes a promise or swears an oath it happen because when He act it cannot be undone a promise is an action so it cannot be reversed. 2 Corinthians 1:15-20 says, “Because I was confident of this, I wanted to visit you first so that you might benefit twice. I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea. Was I fickle when I intended to do this? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner so that in the same breath I say both “Yes, yes” and “No, no”? But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me and Silas and Timothy —was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” Here Paul obviously wanted to stop in Macedonia on the way to where he was going on his way back but for whatever reason he couldn’t so in a way he is saying yes he wanted to but no he didn’t stop in Macedonia. The message of Christ they had to share though it is not a message of Yes and No the way they said both in the same breath but in Him salvation and all the promises of God are yes because if God promised it it won’t be undone. A name for God is the Amen that means “so be it” this says that His name means it has been done already so if it has been done the answer was yes so if it already happened it cannot be reversed. Go through the bible find the promises that He gave to those who follow Him and stand on those promises because the answer already is Yes so it will be done like He said it would.
I will be working on transitioning this study into both the written format on Tuesday and adding a spontaneous group discussion at my house or church if you’d be interested in attending let me know. The church I attend is MorningStar in Fort Mill, SC you can view meetings by going to www.morningstartv.com where you can register for free then watch Friday School of the Spirit at 7pm EST and Sunday at 9 and 11am EST by clicking watch live at the top of the web screen. Let the words spoken and the messages spread into your area share it with friends, loved ones and local believers to spread revival across the nation and around the world. Also for those who don’t already forward the torch to others feel free to forward it to everyone on your buddy list, lets reach more people than ever before with its message. Share it with your churches if you feel lead to. Thanks I pray the Lord will continue touching each of your lives. All of what Christ did he did so we would believe in who he said he was. He told us not to take his word for it but to believe in what he did according to the will of his father who showed him what to do.
I pray that this message will sink into your hearts and minds this week and if anyone is not a believer my prayer is they will meet the Lord. If it’s on your heart to make Jesus Christ your Savior send a message to my email: firstname.lastname@example.org and I will help you do that.
Look out for next Tuesdays Torch found on www.myspace.com/trippy91 or sent from email@example.com this study is written by Tim Sader inspired by The Holy Spirit.
